Freaking amazing. For real, this is amazing. I wanted to a war of the worlds fan movie, and you’ve helped inspire me that a small KZbinr can pull it off. Every scene, I watch; I recognise from the book. I love this-

Hi there A pretty good job there making this short film. Must have taken a while to do. One thing I have to critic about it was the talk between the Writer and the Pub owner over the horse, as it seemed to drag on a lil while for me. But still, great job on it. Euan
@DrOOGNo310 жыл бұрын
Cheers Euan, Yes, we spent a just under a year on this one, but we only meet up for a few hours each week. The 'pub horse' dialogue was something we wrote as a filler between scenes, sorry if it seemed overly long, but we felt it needed breaking up a bit. Still, glad you enjoyed it.

Those Martians gave me a good laugh. The actors were clearly not there, and the voices often faded away. CGI failure. So don't expect the spit and polish of a modern movie. Now sit back and enjoy.

Certainly an epic undertaking with almost no resources, and entertaining. The saddest thing is that, if you guys had access to even 1 percent of the finances of a typical Hollywood blockbuster then I'm sure you could have made something 100 times better than a typical Hollywood blockbuster. The thing that did really grate though was the narrator's voice - it sounded like something from Thomas the Tank Engine. Plenty of detail errors and sloppy stuff in some parts, but balanced by genius in others. Like I said, you guys just need the resources. Fantastic attempt!
@DrOOGNo310 жыл бұрын
Cheers for that, we always welcome constructive criticism and appreciate praise (there was more of the former than criticism) so your comment was most welcome. There's been more than a bit of ribbing in the 'Mesters Films' camp regarding your 'Thomas the Tank' reference, and you gave us a good few chuckles.

A very good movie, but I personally think that one scene where the invaders literary KILLED A CHILD is pretty messed up. But I personally think it's also pretty good at showing just how cold hearted the invaders were. Overall I give it 4 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Thanks Zoe, I think. . . Not sure why you think we would spend 'hours on end' looking at Facebook, at Mesters films we make real films with real people, our friends, at real social occasions (and usually accompanied with a few real ales!)
@ZoeEGrace10 жыл бұрын
Chris Bexton I was teasing. But I only meant you were bucking the trend (Facebooking the trend? Oh, please yourself :P ) I appreciate the hard work that went into it -- I said, "If nothing else". It goes without saying that it was a praiseworthy attempt. Technically, it's as good as Pendragon's effort. If you had the money they threw at it, I think yours would have knocked theirs into a cocked hat. My only criticism would be that you were let down by inconsistencies in the costumes that were a little distracting at times. But keep going. Now, "The First Men in the Moon" would be a real challenge, don't you think? :)
@DrOOGNo310 жыл бұрын
Zoe Joyce Comparable to the Pendragon version? That's incredibly high praise, thank you Zoe. We don't have the facilities, budget or equipment that Pendragon had, we're just a bunch of friends who all get together and decide on a subject we've all got an interest in. When we finished 'War' we'd already planned and embarked on our next film venture, a portmanteau of H.P.Lovecraft tales. We've already got a few weekends worth of 'Mountains of Madness' in the can. . .

I really like this short film. I can tell it was based (in dialogue) from Marvel's comic of the story. However, I don't think that the Thunderchild battle came straight after the Shepperton battle, or that it was responsible for it. Plus, the Thunderchild battle was witnessed by the Narrator's brother who had a much larger story to the book, which seemed completely dropped here. But other than that, a fantastic short film.
@DrOOGNo310 жыл бұрын
Cheers, it's nice to know the film is appreciated. You're correct that we had to change the storyline for the Thunderchild, unfortunately the Brother and the Elphinstone ladies section of the story had to be dropped, this was because some of our friends were unavailable to play those parts and portions of it had to be incorporated into the Narrators storyline.
@ZoeEGrace10 жыл бұрын
Actually, I thought that getting rid of the narrator's brother and putting the Thunderchild in as the climax to the Shepperton battle was a good, cinematic choice. Had Pendragon made choices like that when they filmed their rather rambling version, it might have been less confusing and visually more appealing, (without the glued on moustache, for instance).
@DrOOGNo310 жыл бұрын
Thanks Zoe We didn't have any budget for the joke moustaches. . .
@Selica767 жыл бұрын
LOL! Glued-on moustaches! Pendragon may have wanted their narrator to resemble a young H. G. Wells. He appeared that way. :-)
@Selica767 жыл бұрын
Yes, it appears that the Mesters Films rendition here was based on an abridged version of H. G. Wells' novel in which the adventures of the narrator's brother were left out. However, we still appreciate the fact that Mesters still found a way to incorporate the good ol' Thunder Child into its movie. After all, the Thunder Child served as an integral part of Earth's defense against the Martian invaders. There was a lot of good military action in this movie too. If only a certain, more well-known and popular 2005 cinematic adaptation of the novel could have done the same. :-)

If you don't mind me asking, where were the final scenes filmed (e.g. The scene in which the narrator is running through fields after escaping the ruined house, and then discovering the dead Martians)?
@DrOOGNo310 жыл бұрын
Hi, we used a patch of waste ground between Alfreton and Somercotes in Derbyshire for those scenes (Where a factory was demolished some years ago) Just off the B600, opposite Cotes Park Lane. Hope that helps?
@tarantulaguy19987 жыл бұрын
Chris Bexton You're based in Derbyshire?! Wow, to think that quite a bit of this was filmed in the area where I live (I live in Burton on Trent you see, just down the A38 from Derby), really cool to know, thanks!

Wow
@tarantulaguy19987 жыл бұрын
Also, I can understand that you were probably tight on schedule and run time, but the dialogue from the protagonist just after he escapes the ruined house doesn't make much sense, considering the fact that in your version, he leaves the house before the Martians up and abandon the pit like they do in the book, and the narrator doesn't realise that until a few days later, finding the pit empty and 'staring in amazement' down into it. These lines don't exactly make sense in your version, if the narrator leaves whilst the Martians are still busy in the pit. If he got out and immediately stared into the pit, the Martians would surely see him, capture him and drain him to a pulp. Do you follow me? Just an unfortunate continuity error.
