I'm so happy I found your channel. I'm a new Medical Billing /Coding graduate. Everything that you said is and has been true for me. My biggest challenge has been that I don't have any "real world" billing and coding experience.I've uploaded, dropped off and mailed out hundreds of resumes .I had my first interview last week and they are bringing me back this week to do a working interview for 4 hours. You have inspired me to not give up.Thank you so much. You're real a blessing.

I did not go to school for coding/billing. I went to school for Health Information Technology which does included coding and billing and much much more. Those schools that offer coding/billing courses that last 3-9 months are a rip off and no hospital is going to hire someone from those programs. And also, you can't sit for a national credential exam after going through those programs. They lie to get your money. Research an AHIMA program.

@blummerlo As long as you have the discipline to be a student you should be fine. Word of advice is to always stay in good communication with your teachers.

@calvincdj Your age shouldn't stop you for doing anything but unfortunately your experience as a transcriptionist isn't going to make much of a difference if you're trying to become a coder. Kudos on signing up for the AHIMA courses and I hope they go well.

@fromanotherstar Yes, there are men in the field. Not many but they are there. Schedules just depend on where you work. I have a very flexible schedule but I've also had some rigid schedules.

Wow really great information! I felt like I was sitting in the room with you but what is your thoughts on schools like heald or Carrington that specialize in that area I know it's difficult to break into the field but I also would like to be able to myself out contract out eventually my background is skilled nursing Medical Records so I do have some background.

@davise26 Going into billing can be a challenge because most places don't want to have to train someone. Billing can get very particular and experience speaks volume to a billing group when they are trying to get paid and slowing things down to train someone isn't the best option for them. Thusly, they choose someone with experience. I like training new people because it's a great opportunity for both parties. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Thanks for the helpful information/video regarding coding jobs. My question to you would be - do you believe it would be somewhat simple for me to get a job as coder having 15+ years' experience as a transcriptionist and being 52 years of age? I do plan on taking the AHIMA courses the first of February, 2011, excited about the transition from transcription to coding and wanted to know what you thought - Ms. Johnson

Pink, Are there many males entering the field? Also, what about work schedules? Are there jobs out there that allow you to work 4 straight 10 hour days with 3 off, or is it more of the traditional 8-5 schedule? thanks for your answers and your time.

hi Julie, my name is dasha and I was about to start ultimate medical academy to study medical office and billing specialist, until I found out that I only qualified for fasfa to pay half and six months after graduation I would have to pay the other half as it was a loan, well anyway, I will have to turn them down, so I was looking at us career institute, it offers billing and coding for four months for only 1769.00 something like that price, the question is do u recommend or advice anyone to take a four month course or will employers look at dat as not enough to be hired, I need advice I am so sad now, what do u advice
