海行かば/Umi Yukaba - Anthem of the Japanese Empire (1937-1945)

Umi Yukaba was a Japanese Navy song and the de facto anthem of Japan alongside Kimigayo. Its lyrics come from a poem written sometime in the eighth century, making it one of the oldest national anthems of any country. It was put to music by Kiyoshi Nobutoki, a catholic who it is said based its melody on the hymn “Nearer, my God, to Thee.” The song was sung by Kamikaze pilots before they made their last journey, and it is still used as a Navy Hymn today.

A truly beautiful song. An ancient poem set to music in 1937, fatalistic and patriotic at the same time, can send chills down your spine when you discover the history of Japan at this period. May all the victims of that terrible war, wherever they fell, rest in peace.

Im an American and was finishing Ian Toll's first book in trilogy, and it mentioned that this song was played while burying Japanese sailors at sea in the aftermath of midway. So I had to look it up. Rest in Peace to all sailors who died in that war.

Operation Ichi-Go is an operation conducted by the Japanese Army on the Chinese mainland from April 17th to December 10th, 1944 during the Sino-Japanese War. It was the last major offensive of the Japanese Army, which caused the National Revolutionary Army to be hit hard and affected during the Chinese Civil War. However, on the other hand, the United States is also mediating the conclusion of the Double Tenth Agreement with Chiang Kai-shek in order to avoid a civil war. According to a study by Barbara W. Tuchman, the results of this operation had a more significant impact on the subsequent war situation than the Japanese had imagined, and had a decisive impact on Japan's fate. According to it, Franklin Roosevelt has consistently strongly trusted and supported Chiang Kai-shek since the beginning of the war, and encouraged him in the war against Japan so that he would not drop out of the Allies in a single peace with Japan during the Cairo Conference. However, he said that he changed his mind because the front of Chiang Kai-shek collapsed due to this operation. Tried to make it more poetic and more precise: To sea if I go Washed-up corpse become shall I To mountains if I go Grass-grown corpse become shall I At my sovereign's side I'll die if I will have to And never ever look back Those lyrics were written by Otomo-no Yakamochi, who was supreme commander of Japanese army under Emperor Kanmu.

Umi Yukaba was never a national anthem, but a poem written over a millennium ago and set to music in 1937. Wildly popular from that point, it became an unofficial anthem of the militarist state responsible for some of the worst crimes of the century, by our modern standards at least

"Twilight of the Gods" by Ian Toll , pg. 197 If I go away to sea, I shall return a corpse awash. If duty calls me to the mountain, A verdant sward will be my pall. Thus for the sake of the Emperor, I will not die peacefully at home. Seems a bit more militaristic, but read the translation of "La Marseillaise" so time.
