Because they prefer the superficial and too fast playing of Wang and Triffonov and Co, because they thing speed is everything. Helene Grimed is one of the few pianists who doesn't constantly show of her virtuosity because she cares about the music and not of herself. This is definitively the case by Las Vegas Wang. She wants attention first and foremost. This performance of Grimauld is one of the finest I´ve ever heard.

@@arthurenzo3075 You are so wrong. First of all "they prefer the superficial and too fast playing of Wang and Triffonov and Co, because they thing speed is everything" is a stupid and very shortsighted answer that in fact is no answer at all to the question why the audience members are not standing on their chairs. I attended a concert with Yuja Wang and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra a couple of weeks ago, playing this same concerto. Well, it was one of the best versions I've heard so far (and I've listened to a lot). Spicy, up-tempo and excited in the appropriate places while still resounding clear musical phrases, but very balanced, intimate and perfectly in sync with the soloists and the orchestra in the adagio assai.

@@arthurenzo3075 It is great to see you taking the time to reply at length on New Year's Day. I agree with most of what you say. The part about classical music being like Hollywood music and nothing more than entertainment holds some truth, but it's a bold statement nevertheless. 🙂 I listen to lots of music genres and classical music (over many centuries) is a big part of it. I prefer to focus on so much that is going on besides what "the big labels" promote. There are so many ways to discover and enjoy music nowadays. Recordings, video's, live concerts of professional as well as amateurs and enthusiast. And it keeps me excited in ways that surpass the entertainment level. Happy new year filled with good music!

Ravel was a singular composer, without peer. He is truly modern and his influences carry over to many film composers through the millenium. No one else could exact the color and surprise from an orchestra as he was able. Gershwin came France to seek him out as his compositions reflect. Helene Grimaud understands his music like few other pianists. She makes it live and breathe as if it had new life. This performance is perfection.

WIF791, I agree completely. I just finished listening to Martha Argerich’s rendition of this piece. I found her 1st and 3rd movements played just a bit too fast for my liking. For me, her second movement lacked any personal feeling. Helene, on the other hand, played this 2nd movement with her heart and soul. And her 1st and 3rd are perfect in pace and feeling, and are played with the heart as well. Just look at her luminous face throughout the whole. She seems transpired by the music. Last comment…..way down the line of importance. Helene Grimaud is a beautiful woman and very easy to “look” at. Much better to listen to, though.
