The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung wrote of this recital by pianist Hélène Grimaud at the Kammer Musiksaal of the Berlin Philharmonie, “She doesn’t only play the piano - she feels it and she lives it. Every single note proves her devotion to perfection ... her unconventional style captivates everyone in the audience.”
Arguably one of the very top pianists of her generation, her concert career took off in 1987 when she was in her early twenties and she now performs with major orchestras around the world as well as being in demand for recital appearances. The spontaneity of her playing is breathtaking. Not to be afraid of taking risks and always to play as though it is the first time is Hélène Grimaud’s maxim.
Her program for this recording features Bach’s Chaconne in D minor, Beethoven’s Sonata No. 31 in A flat Op. 110, and Brahms’ Sonata No. 3 in F minor Op. 5. As encores, she plays two of Rachmaninov’s Etudes-tableaux Op. 33.

J’ai mis du temps à apprécier, à comprendre la musique pour piano seul de Brahms, plus difficile d’accès que ces concertos pour piano, et plus difficile d’accès, selon moi, que celle de Chopin, Beethoven ou même Liszt. Pourtant, cette vidéo m’a fasciné dès le départ, et m’a donné « les clefs » vers l’univers de Brahms et de « son piano » ! Hélène Grimaud est sans contexte une grande interprète et une merveilleuse ambassadrice de ce compositeur ! Depuis, j’écoute cette sonate sans arrêt ! Merci Madame !! 😌

Hélène Grimaud's recital 2001 at the Berlin Philharmonic is a miraculous concert. The performances of all the pieces are excellent, but I especially think that Brahms' Piano Sonata No. 3 was completely revived by this performance. Brahms' innovative composition was given a whole new life by Hélène Grimaud's beautiful, profound, exquisite and daring performance. I am happy to have heard this.

It's a sound performance, but I do not find as profound as you seem to. Over pedalled and less subtle than I would like, but I agree it is a difficult piece of early Brahms to pull off.

Interprétation de haute volée comme toujours dans Brahms avec qui Grimaud a des affinités particulières. 15:30 indépendance des mains, sonorités horowitziennes avec basses saillantes et décalées, des aigus qui claquent. La fin est une tuerie rappelant la puissance d’un Katchen 33:30 29:03 sa façon franche et impérieuse de chanter au fond du clavier! J’adore! Sa tenue... à l’image du reste, classe beauté et élégance. Cela change des nymphettes dénudées.

2021: A Recent Brahms Piano Concerto no.3 was composed from the Brahms Violin concerto but Arranged as a new Transcription now 150 + years later .. 1889-2021 posthumously. Brahms was quite a Don Juan and this Sonata was inspired by a date in the Black Forrest but became an unrequited love affair. Brahms traveled to forget this. While in Palermo Sicily, (an Italian Island) he became more prolific and composed greater works. As s child he performed and traveled w/his musician father! ...

Biographie Enfance et formation Hélène Grimaud est née à Aix-en-Provence. Du côté maternel, elle serait, d'après ses déclarations, issue de Juifs berbères établis en Corse et, du côté paternel, serait descendante de Juifs algériens1,2. Certaines sources3, indiquent aussi que les ancêtres paternels d'Hélène Grimaud étaient originaires de Trets en Provencenote 1,4. Hélène Grimaud découvre la musique et le piano à l'âge de sept ans, avec les heures d'initiation à la musique de Marie-Françoise Tarrit. Celle-ci convainc ses parents de la confier à Jacqueline Courtin, qui la prépare au conservatoire d'Aix-en-Provence. À onze ans, elle est présentée à Pierre Barbizet, qui la prend comme élève et avec lequel elle poursuit ses études musicales au conservatoire de Marseille. Pierre Barbizet restera sa référence, son « maître ». À treize ans, elle est reçue première à l'unanimité au Conservatoire national supérieur de musique de Paris et entre dans la classe de Jacques Rouvier. En 1987, Hélène Grimaud joue ses premiers concerts en dehors du conservatoire5. Elle participe au Midem de Cannes, au festival de piano de La Roque-d'Anthéron, où elle est remarquée par Jorge Bolet. Celui-ci confiera à Alain Lompech, qui en rend compte dans Le Monde : « Hélène Grimaud ? Je n'ai pas rencontré un talent aussi extraordinaire depuis longtemps ». Suivent ses rencontres avec Jacques Thelen, qui devient son agent, René Martin, directeur du Festival de La Roque-d'Anthéron, et Pierre Vozlinsky, directeur artistique de l'Orchestre de Paris, puis son audition par Daniel Barenboim, chef de l'Orchestre de Paris. Il l'invite alors à donner des concerts avec l'orchestre5. Carrière Hélène Grimaud donne son premier récital en soliste à Tokyo, puis à Paris. En 1990, elle joue à Cleveland. Après quoi, elle entreprend une longue tournée aux États-Unis, de Washington à la Floride, en passant par Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Baltimore, New York où elle donne un premier récital au Metropolitan. En 1991, alors âgée de 21 ans, elle s'établit à Tallahassee en Floride. Elle y fait la rencontre d'un vétéran du Vietnam solitaire qui élève une louve dont elle hérite à la mort du vieil homme. Elle se passionne alors pour ces animaux, étudie leurs mœurs et leurs comportements et décide de créer une fondation et un parc consacrés à leur étude et à leur réhabilitation. Elle obtient un diplôme d'éthologie, indispensable pour ouvrir un tel centre. Au printemps 1997, elle cofonde avec le photographe J.Henry Fair le Wolf Conservation Center à South Salem, dans l'État de New York : une organisation privée, à but non lucratif, visant à étudier et promouvoir la sauvegarde du loup. Hélène Grimaud est aujourd'hui correspondante de plusieurs organisations scientifiques et œuvre pour la réintroduction du loup dans son milieu naturel. Hélène Grimaud gelingt es das herrchschende wie das emfindsame Element des Komponisten, das Männliche wie das Weibliche, in schönen musikalischen "Ein-KLANG" zu bringen. Think about this: Brahms (and ALL his brilliance) was at one time smaller than a grain of sand. This lady does a good job but Brahms not only played it, he wrote it and wrote it well. He was the creator and Someone Else was HIS Creator. Bravo!!!

I’m not big on celebrity worship, even of classical music artists. Give them their due of course but the real genius here is the composer. Brahms disavowed any kind of adulation and I wish today’s performers would do the same (and I wish their audiences would restrain their cloying sycophancy at times).
