It was a staple in some orthodox households in old mysore side especially in cold rainy weather. I used to make this for my wife when she gave birth to our child. This used to be a staple for new mothers.

This is a nice recipe. Seems a traditional dish. In our side - South Bangalore / Kolar - we also make haalu menasina saru or as we just call haalu Saru. Slight differences. We always use a vegetable like padavalakayi , dry avarekalu, hasi thogari kalu or chapparadavarekayi...with potato. For masala we roast pepper, garlic, dry red chilli, dry copra and little rice. Grind to smooth paste. Add to cooked vegetables and boil. Finally add little milk from huchchellu and little plain milk. This does not have any oil. Not even tempering. This is mostly made in winter, of when we have a cold. Especially made for new mothers, in which case no potato is added. It is also called bananthi saru. This is a very traditional item. Very tasty also.

@VegRecipesofKarnataka Thank you. I don't know how to make these videos and post. So it is nice if you can make it. There's a shortcut to this as many youngsters may not have time to make a fresh masala every time. I used to roast the ingredients except garlic and powder them smoothly and add garlic powder as needed. I would also roast huchechellu and grind along with them. This can be stored in the air-tight jar in the fridge for a couple of months. Can be used for haalu saru or for any soup. I used to send this powder to my daughter abroad. Hope atleast some of your viewers will find this useful.

Milk and salt are opposite (incompatible) foods as per ayurveda. They should never be combined. It is important to do some research about food and health before sharing recipes.

This is an age-old traditional recipe, not my invention. I believe in my ancestors.
@oreogiri8 ай бұрын
We also make this, slightly different but it is an age old saru. Also in many soups we add salt, pepper and milk. I don’t know about ayurveda cooking but I am 65 years old and most of my cooking is traditional Kannada cuisine and handed over to me from my mother and mother in law.
