Ron, you would have thought you were in train heaven had you been fortunate to visit ,like I did, weekly, the Polk brothers 5 story high 5th Avevue Hobby shop, " Polk's " in midtown Manhattan at 32nd Street where an entire level was dedicated to their Aristo line and to Rivarossi trains, AHM , etc .etc..in the 50's and 60's. They were even featured in the " Godfather " movies... They eventually moved in retirement, over to a small train and remote control car / plane hobby shop in Ridgefield,NJ and in Jersey City NJ which is now, I believe sold or operated by an other individual. [ might be a son -in- law of either original Polk brother ]..

As an add on to my comment above; I was once in Nathan Polk's Hobby Center in New York City and was inquiring about a particular Rivarossi engine and they didn't have it in stock. This had to be in the late '50s. Nathan Polk picked up the phone, calls overseas and after a brief phone call-- tells me to " pick up your locomotive this Saturday if your'e in the neighborhood. " 😊 That was the kind of connections and business the Polk brothers had going ...back in the day...

Hi Ron. I stumbled across one of your videos a couple months ago. Wasn't looking for model train videos. Not a railroad buff. Maybe because I retired from the railroad. I was a carman for NS for 30 years. But, your video inspired me to get out an old Tyco train set I got when I was a kid. Probably 60 years ago. It has not seen the light of day since then. It came with a Mantua/Tyco Baltimore and Ohio diesel and a Plymouth Switcher. I believe that is what it is. After watching several of your videos I was able to get them both running. I enjoy your humor and appreciate your knowledge. Thanks.

I have a C&O Pacific made by that company. I got it from an Animal shelter Ebay auction from somewhere out West like Kansas or Arizona untested. The pics looked great just a little dusty. Unfortunately the motor was cooked. I found a used motor on Ebay that looked similar to the one that it came with but was too wide to fit in the chassis. I trimmed the chassis frame with Dremel nicked the rear driving wheel couple times. then broke the brittle brush insulator on the replacement motor. I gave up it now in the future projects or parts department of my train room along with some Bachmann steam locos with the broken plastic axle shafts and gears. I had upgraded the headlight to bright white LED too. You did an outstanding job with this loco. That polished brass looked awesome good as new after all these years. This inspires me to get it out and see if some of the motors I got in a lot of electronics fit. Thanks for posting.

I did not know that Aristo Craft did any HO or O scale models. I remember in the 90's and early 2000's, that Aristo Craft was making G scale models. I always wanted their 4-6-2 Pacific in G scale. Beautiful loco Ron, how much would a beauty like that set a feller back in the 50's or 60's? Sad that Aristo Craft went out of business too. They had a Southern Cresent train with the heavy weight passenger cars in G scale, always wanted that train.

@@classicmodeltrains Probably Aristo Craft's most famous G Scale offerings were the Eggliners. I have several NOS examples for my wife and my garden railway. If that engine was made by One Main as you mention, then you and Astro Craft are fortunate. One Main was notorious for developing zinc pest; I have a One Main Camelback 4-6-0 that has the broken tender truck, warped tender frame, crumbling tender tank, and similar issues all over the locomotive itself. I doubt it will ever run again; so I just display it in my display case.

I remember I owned, in order, the Uncle Tom, Thomas Rogers Mogul, the C&NW Atlantic, and the Teakettle, and I was planning to get the Bicycle. Sadly, it was not to be. I couldn't get the Mogul to work again because the unique frame of the vertical motor broke, Tom & Thomas came down with zinc rot, and Teakettle also had signs of rot internally, so I quickly sold it to my hobby shop before it crumbled to nothing. I say Aristo-Craft had great ideas for models, but they executed them poorly, and while I might be dissatisfied with the experience, Aristo did expose me to what would contribute to my favorite real life locomotives, specifically the Lovett Ames 4-2-2 and the C&NW D 4-4-2.

While my bread and butter is on the lines of Mantua & Bowser I do dabble in modern engines as long as they're diecast like my 20 year old Trix USRA and my BLI 3768. Aristo Craft made that whole series of locos in the late 50s early 60s. I picked up four or five at my local dealer in 65 in his junk box. Two only needed adjusting the motor to make proper contact with the drive gear to operate properly the others required minor to major tinkering to get them running. All were cast metal with Pittman style motors and were locos modeled on the late 1800s or very early 1900s

I have the New One/Aristo-Craft 0-4-0, very smooth runner after a full cleaning and new lubricants, shimmed the motor and it runs very quietly. However it does require a lot of power to get moving. Your 4-6-0 seems to bind up once per revolution. It may be one of the con rods, probably could trouble shoot by removing one, then the other, and seeing if the bump goes away.

It is my understanding that Kader / Bachmann has the Aristo-Kraft molds and tooling. But just like with the former Williams O Gauge molds and dies and tooling, Bachmann has done nothing with the HO line from Aristo- Kraft. Bachman does concentrate on the 1: 29 scale G, and it's own 1:87 HO products,with very limited actual new products.Bachmann, IMHO needs new corporate leadership to give the company a true mission plan and outline of new projects moving forward. Especially for all the now extinct product lines it bought up decades ago and to which it has done nothing with.

@@franktino6676 I do know they re-released the Eggliners with some improvements like LED lights, but without the wire to connect to a battery boxcar behind it. They also changed the internal wiring as well, but once you change the plugs, the motor block will work on an Aristo-Craft body.

Many discussed their frustration about the Williams line under Bachmann in recent years. There is no comeback in the Williams line it seems. It’s too bad. Williams played an important role, and Bachmann held the product line together for a few years before losing interest in it and deciding the market wasn’t profitable enough in O gauge. Nothing has changed. And nothing will as long as Bachmann’s mass-market-minded holding company Kader controls Bachmann.

If the engine was run regularly on the layout, how long should you wait before you re-oil and re-grease the engine parts?

6 months to a year I would guess.

The motor and chasis really reminds me of triang trains. Do you have any Triang locos in the collection? I bought an old Triang yesterday actually and it runs beautifully after a service

You may want to check out the book "Royal Blue Line" by Herbert H. Hardwood, Jr. It covers the B&O between Washington and New York in detail. It also includes a roster of passenger engines assigned to the division.

you're going to lose power when you take the magnet out which is probably why takes a lot to get going unless you remagged it?
@classicmodeltrains
@classicmodeltrains Жыл бұрын
Magnets loose power by extreme heat or cold or being dropped. They will slowly loose magnetism over time. But simply removing it from the armature frame and handling it properly will not cause it any harm. I do have to say though, a video on re-magnetising would be a good idea and you Sir planted that seed. Thanks!! :-)

@@classicmodeltrains. Maybe its different in the USA, but in the uk those type of motors lose 70/80% of their power being taken out of the frame. you can usually tell as they run hot, need a lot of power to move off and you can't pick they up by the end of a screwdriver. I'm planning to invest in a remag machine as I have a good 20 with weak motors and buying Neo magnets can get expensive! enjoy your video"s by the way

Yep, those old X04 motors need some PWM to get them to start smoothly or at least without so much of a jum.

I hear PWM transformers are really hard on stuff. It does seem to make since that they would get these going a bit smoother.

Hey Ron, couple questions, firstly, i love your videos and subscribed!!! Second, since you have brought new life to this particular aristo craft Royal blue loco, and since its my favorite loco in ho scale, i wanted to kindly request something...So I won the same exact loco on ebay and its never been run except test run and she runs fine...i was hoping that since the tender's paint / numbers arent good, is it possible that I could send both my engine and tender in their box into you if i pay shipping both ways and you kindly give her new life and coat of paint / numbers as part of a restoration in a video? whatever you think is best in terms of restoration for the little beauty is 100% fine with me and it would be really cool to see her taken apart and cleaned / painted...Hope you dont mind =)

Good morning. I have done a video on this particular locomotive so I do not want to do another one. I am really not much of a painter. I have a set of trains here currently I am going to try out my painting skills on. I have made several video's about how I go about re-painting locomotives. 2 of them are repainting Marx locomotives and a recent one on repainting a American Flyer. Perhaps you could pick up a few pointers and give it a shot yourself. I would of course practice on a cheap boxcar or something first. When I sold my Aristocraft loco it pulled in a pretty decent price. many people bid on it. You might not want to re-paint because it could kill off the value of this collectable loco. Just my 2 cents worth :-)

A trick to cleaning small electric motors like that is to submerge them and rubbing alcohol and then put power to them and as they run, they will clean up really nice are used to do it all the time

I have a video where I did that to a Mantua MU-2 motor but I used jewelry cleaner. A few Fellers mentioned that technique to me and I had to try it out.

Lay a small piece of some stiff paper on the steam chest and poke holes were the rods slide in. Use paper to hold slide rods as you put them into the steam chest. Tear paper off. Violla!

Why do people prefer can Motors over the original Motors?
@classicmodeltrains
@classicmodeltrains Жыл бұрын
Can motors pull less amps so a DCC decoder can power them. Usually have better low RPM performance. If a Feller upgraded the magnet on the old open frame ones they really perform a LOT better

Molding clay works well if you need to hold something like trucks in 1 spot. Set it up where you need it. Pull back enough to put in CA . Then push back together. And holds forever forever forever for-evor. Lol. Goonies

The fact the slope back tender was also from the same manufacturer was lucky (sorta) as it was considered to be a donor parts unit, but it does prove the old adage true as to why a model railroader NEVER tosses/throws anything out because as soon as it is tossed/thrown away, we SUDDENLY need it, or it has a use. Model railroaders are some of the biggest "pack rats" in any hobby it seems........LOL
