Story Time: In the heart of a desolate land known as Drenmoor, where the mists never lifted, a lone ranger walked with measured, entranced steps, his cerulean cloak trailing behind like a silent echo. No one knew his name, nor his purpose, for he himself couldn’t remember. His legs moved without will, and each step seemed to pull him deeper into the forests and mountains of Drenmoor, a place feared for swallowing travelers whole. The trees here stood blackened, their branches twisted and gnarled as if shaped by centuries of pain. The mist was thick and cloying, settling like a blanket across the land and tricking the senses, muting sounds, distorting shadows. The ranger felt the mist pressing on him, heard the faint whispers of voices that seemed just beyond reach. He knew them to be illusions, tricks of the place-yet they unnerved him, pricking at his mind. His body moved, his feet grinding against the ground, but his mind struggled against it. He was being drawn to something, some powerful source deep within Drenmoor, and all he could do was follow. It was as if his legs belonged to another, some invisible sorcerer tugging him forward like a puppet. Somewhere within him, buried beneath the enchantment, the ranger’s mind resisted, fighting the pull, but the spell’s grip was powerful, and he gave in, resigning himself to the journey. After what seemed like days, perhaps longer-time was treacherous here-he descended into a valley shrouded in fog. From the haze loomed a shape, blood-red and massive. A structure, though twisted and wrong, carved into the likeness of a hollowed head with gaping, vacant eyes. He stopped, staring up at it, his heart pounding with an unfamiliar fear. The head’s expression was frozen in a sinister smile, and the eye sockets were so dark and so deep that they seemed to absorb the very light around them. He knew this place, though he had never seen it before. Whispers spoke of a figure here, a being that had once ruled through terror and power-Varak the Hollow, a sorcerer cast into the underworld eons ago, cursed to dwell beyond the mortal realm forever. But here he was, his essence entwined with this eerie vessel, his influence growing stronger with each passing day. The structure was a monument to Varak’s twisted will, a grotesque face watching over Drenmoor, filled with hunger that could never be sated. The ranger’s legs continued to move, pulling him closer to the red stone. As he neared, he noticed figures around the base of the head, moving in a slow, agonizing rhythm. They were shadowy, indistinct shapes, beings with hollow eyes, their expressions blank as they worked, carrying stones and stacking them meticulously, one atop another. Hundreds, perhaps thousands of them, all marching in perfect silence, forced to expand the vessel’s height and width, adding new layers to the sorcerer’s grotesque effigy each day. He was almost upon it when he felt the weight of Varak’s influence seeping into him. A force, a whisper at first, invaded his mind, pushing, testing, probing his thoughts. Then came the voice, low and rough like gravel, filling his skull with demands. “Build. Build higher.” The ranger’s hand trembled, reaching toward the stones by his feet. He fought against it, but the whisper grew louder, consuming his thoughts. He could feel Varak’s mind-the endless hunger, the insatiable drive to control, to take. The sorcerer’s greed was a black pit, a devouring maw that would never be filled. Varak’s control was tight, woven through every soul gathered here, binding them into a single, throbbing hive mind that pulsed with the sorcerer’s twisted will. The ranger clenched his teeth, trying to force his mind free. Remember yourself, he told himself, grasping onto the fragments of who he was before the mists and the spell. His name was lost to him, his purpose faded, but his spirit still clung to something-a resolve, a faint glimmer of defiance against the voice echoing in his head. “You will serve,” the voice commanded again, sharper now, with the weight of ages behind it. A flicker of anger ignited within him, a spark that grew brighter with every pulse of Varak’s control. The ranger gritted his teeth, tightening his hold over his thoughts, searching the depths of his mind for any weapon, any resistance against the sorcerer’s will. The mists swirled around him, thickening, tightening like a noose. He focused on that spark, letting it flare, casting light over the shadow that was Varak’s influence. His pulse slowed, his breathing evened. He could almost hear the cracks forming, small breaks in the sorcerer’s hold. A noise-deep, guttural-rumbled from the red hollowed head, as if Varak had sensed the ranger’s defiance. The ground shook, and the mist thickened, pressing down harder, but the ranger remained still, his mind a fortress. And then, in a final act of defiance, he closed his eyes, concentrating every bit of his will on breaking the spell. The voices in his head receded, like a tide pulling back, and in a last moment of silence, he felt himself slipping free. The spell lifted, if only for an instant. He opened his eyes and looked up, his gaze locking with the hollow eye sockets of the stone head. It was as if Varak himself stared back at him, a gaze heavy with ancient rage, filled with the promise of eternal servitude. But the ranger’s mind was his own, if only for a heartbeat, and he turned from the figure, taking a step back, his mind unclouded and sharp. He knew that his victory was fragile, that the dark sorcery still lurked within him, waiting to pull him back. But he would fight it. And as he turned to leave, the mist thickened, the red structure fading into the gloom. He felt the sorcerer’s pull again, an inevitable tether to something he could not fully escape. Yet for that single, stolen moment, he was free. As he walked back into the mist, Varak’s hollow gaze followed, and the ranger knew he was not alone in his mind.
