Downsides to heavy sway bars: 1) SNAP OVERSTEER, 2) reduces independence of tires, making suspension less able to keep tires on the ground. Minimizing body roll is only only necessary for high down force race cars. On these cars, maintaining an exact ground clearance is critical to the aerodynamics. If the car rolls in a corner, they lose down force...and slide off the track. Obviously this is not ideal. But they are controlling ride height with springs and custom suspension geometry, not huge sway bars! On a street car, you want stiffer springs with custom valved shocks. Stock valving on coilovers is often unnecessarily harsh, forcing the car onto the bump stops (down-jacking) which causes jarring...and hurts performance. But granted almost nobody drives on the limit...and these problems matter when you are approaching the limit of grip.

fredy gump I agreed. Stiffer springs are better for that

So an ideal setup is a better setup rear end via coilovers rather than sway bars ? My Polo GTI has no rear sway bar and uses thet XDS system to try emulate an LSD, i had thought about adding a rear sway and turning the system off, Over here in the Uk the cars Under steer by defult and a rear sway bar would give better turn in would it not ?
@RobertLeBlancPhoto6 жыл бұрын
I upgraded my RSB on my current car and last 2 cars simply to reduce under steer. Simple as that.

Hi, any tips for DCC equipped Golf GTI mk7.5? What is the OE size of the rear sway bar and does it really make sense to upgrade in that case, or there is just a higher risk of messing up the OE setup, or negligible advantage unless going for very thick bars? Thanks!

From what I understand, making the rear suspension on an FWD car can mitigate oversteer. Which sounds great, but I worry about introducing 'lift off' oversteer. Any thoughts? Thanks.
@sometimesvincegilligansome5802 Жыл бұрын
I’m not sure if the rear sway bar would increase or reduce lift off oversteer, or if it even matters. Ibe made my mk6 gti oversteer a couple times though lol
@joseph-ow1hf Жыл бұрын
@@sometimesvincegilligansome5802 Actually from what I've seen (thinking specifically of videos with Chris Harris) lift off oversteer on a track is the way to get a FWD to rotate. So it's actually a good thing. My real concern would more properly called 'snap' oversteer, the rear kicking out unexpectedly on the street. But I suppose not trying to drive at the limit, like a sane person would negate that worry.😊 BTW: liftoff oversteer can happen on RWD cars as well.
@oskjan1 Жыл бұрын
Yes, a stiffer rear sway bar will shift the balance towards oversteer. You get a more responsive car but sacrifice stability/safety. If you are an experienced driver then no problem, but there's a reason VW didn't do it like that from factory.

@Deutscheautoparts Is the HR 24mm nonadjustable rear sway bar for street of track application. Im lowered about 1.2inches on coilovers.
@sinoperture7 жыл бұрын
I did these on my old TTS front and rear. They help - but honestly the best mod is to ditch a FWD car and get RWD one. The flatness that you talk about is a bit of a misnomer - it will change the grip levels on a smooth surface but the risk on the street and rough roads is wheel lift and less grip. These are added to help dial out under steer. And the only way to really do that is to lose the FWD car.
@lifeistooshortletitgo95746 жыл бұрын
I wish anyone commenting had a clue. If you can't control the push on a FWD car maybe you just need to slow down, Sway bars are a great add.

In effect with a good size rear Sway bar does it not make XDS+ redundant ? the effect of getting a flat rear and better turn in with less under steer using updated rear bar is in effect doing what XDS is trying to do?

Why not both ends? I'm considering doing the roll bars instead of springs & dampers. I like the ride height and for UK roads, the springs are about right but it rolls like a bastard through the twisties
@thedude479510 ай бұрын
Because FWD cars are prone to understeer, and since he beefed up the rear ARB, it's now slightly less peone to that. A thicker front ARB is useful if more understeer was desired.

I wonder if you spend money on any bar would it be a strut bar or rear sway bar?

A thicker rear swaybar will increase oversteer. Stiffening the front will increase understeer.

I recently installed bc racing coilovers on my car. Got the car aligned and everything but since install the front end when going over bumps and slow speeds it sounds like my front end is going to fall apart. Kinda like blown struts. Any idea what this could be?

Cole Gagnon I've been told this is normal if you have a race setup. Is it like a bunch of knocking? This may be a solution for us with coilovers. store.034motorsport.com/strut-mount-street-density-mkvii-volkswagen-golf-gti-r-8v-8s-audi-a3-s3-tt-tts-mqb.html

I have camber plates as well so I'm unsure if that part will work with the coilovers + camber plates
@Deutscheautoparts7 жыл бұрын

@fredygump55787 жыл бұрын
If it is like blown struts...then you are talking about hitting bump stops? I hear this is normal for coilovers, due to the valving. Try searching for "suspension truth" for videos about shock performance, springs, valving, etc. Depending on what you bought, you might be able to get your shocks custom tuned by someone who knows how to make suspension work right.

For racing sway anti roll bars are great. However, for street driving with potholes, bad roads etc., they are not the best rattle vehicle etc? Your thoughts overall?
@brianii58094 жыл бұрын
A rear sway bar will allow you to add oversteer without stiffening the rear suspension (with higher spring rates). So, no
@cyrusjones83265 жыл бұрын
Why are you upgrading just the rear swaybar, why not front and rear? I have a MkVII as a daily driver and I want to make it handle better. Should I do both sway bars or just the rear?
@DonsShed5 жыл бұрын
Just the Rear Sway Bar is an easy install and most DIY'ers can do it themselves at home...... the Front Sway Bar is a lot harder as you need to drop the Front Sub-Frame in the vehicle to get to the Sway Bar and replace it.
