Rear Sway Bar and Link UPGRADE 2019 Golf R

Today we upgrade the rear sway bar on the Golf R! Replacing a rear sway bar and sway bar links is one of the best suspension modifications a FWD and AWD car can get. This is a sway bar upgrade, but if you are having sway bar bushing noise, sway bar link noise, you can follow this DIY as well. Upgrading a rear sway bar introduces more oversteer in a FWD/AWD car. This allows the car to turn easier. The best part it doesn't impact the car in normal driving conditions. Thank you to WD-40 for being such a great partner on this video #humblemechanic

When I first installed the 034 RSB on my '18 R, it felt lively in normal driving but turning into high speed sweepers felt spooky, like the back end wanted to come around - didn't like that at all. Once I installed their upgraded front sway as well, however, the car felt much better. The greatly reduced amount of lean works well with the McPherson suspension to maintain negative camber in turns for more grip, and the car feels safe. My personal recommendation is to do both bars.

The DCC is more than enough for me. All cars have limits regardless of mods. I am confident with the all wheel drive system in race mode. If it understeers then I have pushed that limit. I don’t need to go any faster, just enjoying the G’s!!Thx for sharing.

Did this on MK7 and fortunately had installed at a shop I use (because their problem to correct), same exact end links as yours. The problem I had was end link mounted to frame, the OEM bolt could not handle the stiffness of bigger sway bar and would rattle and to eliminate had to weld nut to frame to make rigid.

Nice to see somebody how's not just making there car a straight pipe and put more power to the engine. The R has plenty of power as is. And suspe spension, breaks upgrades a d chassi upgrade is also fun. I remember when i had a Corolla AE92 GSi and my friend had a G2 GTi 8V his car was a bit faster but i could beat him in small roads because i put on some H&R springs, Bilstein dampers and Toyo CF1 tyres and he put on a Super cheap hight adjustable suspension and Roadstone tyres. His car was to stif to control the small bumbs in the road and his tyres didn't have enough grip to drive it as fast, it maybe could, but you have no feeling of how much you where pushing the tyres. After some time my friend switched to the same tyres and the CF1 is now his favorite Tyre for his cars because it's good value for the money. Would love to se a laptime with a Stock, yours and a engine modified only golf R to se the gains maybe with 3 diffrend drivers and make it a test like some body does to motocross mashines where they have a lot of diffrend riders frome a matures to pro's to see with is the best for them and and why

What is your opinion of running stock links with a smaller, upgraded bar, Charles? I think most probably aren't as diligent about maintenance as you (i.e. cleaning the aftermarket pieces and greasing bushings regularly) - myself included. Instead, I've been beating around the idea of grabbing either a TTRS bar or one of the smaller aftermarket bars available and running stock links and bushings. Curious to know your thoughts!

Swaybar and end-links do not need to have the suspension at ride height/loaded to be torqued down, not sure what your reasoning was for that. Bushings that will flex/move with the suspension ie control arms DO need to be torqued at ride height....but not swaybars/links, the swaybar bushings are fixed to the chassis and do not “move” based on vehicle/suspension movement. And the tightening position for the links will not affect their movement or “resting/ride height” position whether it’s torqued up in the air or at ride height. That’s my only comment, everything else was great love your vids. Great work!

Great video Charles! One of the big criticisms of say a TTRS (similar would apply to Golf R) compared to something like a Cayman S is its handling and steering response due to front weight bias. To what extent do you think a good rear sway bar and a bit of toe out up front would correct this? How close to the handling of a Cayman do you think you could get?
