Nano planted tanks are my favorite! My personal top favorites that I've had a lot of success with (no CO2, low/med light) is: 1- java fern needle leaf 2- java fern windelov 3- crypt wendtii bronze 4- crypt parva 5- hydrocotyle leucocephala (brazilian pennywort) 6- hydrocotyle tripartita japan (dwarf pennywort) 7 - s.repens The pennywort was my absolute favorite, both of them. They like to float, so I got a tiny suction cup with a clip and attached them low in the back and the sides and covered the cup with a bit of substrate and a few rocks. I wrapped a few strands around the spider wood that was in there, too.

I ordered some Marimo moss balls while I was out of town, and my mom put 2 in my convict cichlid tank. They tore one apart and basically buried the other one. That was about a month ago, I have the two recovering moss balls in a breeding net hanging from the side of a 29 gallon guppy tank, they certainly can take some abuse, so long as you can roll them back into a ball shape I guess.

Really Enjoyed this video, i've watched about 25 Tropica layout videos and none of them are nearly as good as this one for information at least. So nice to hear what you can actually do with a plant (not just a slow mo of a plant in an aquarium) would love to see more videos on this subject or maybe a little bigger aquariums.

The Marimo moss balls are actually algae not moss, the cool thing about it is they suck up everything algae sucks up so to a small extent it’s also an algae inhibitor, but it grows incredibly slow and pretty much stays in the ball unless you smash it into the gravel.

bacopa is awesome i feel like it could be used as a background plant and its easy to propagate and i get what you mean with appropriate size i bought an amazon sword for a five gallon and it filled up the tank in a few months
@sarahville19276 жыл бұрын
Hee hee hee! 😊 I definitely have the bad habit of buying plants I like rather than ones that are the appropriate size for my tank! I have a 10 gallon tank. Probably my favorite plant that I have in there is a Madagascar lace plant. It is a really unusual looking plants and I love it, but it is really NOT suitable for a 10 gallon. It really should be in a much larger tank. That being said, it has already flowered a few times and I have only had it for maybe 4 months. Also, it sends up new leaves all the time, so I guess it's happy. My favorite plant that I didn't want is the banana plant. I was turned off by the "bananas." I'm really happy I got one, though, because it is absolutely gorgeous and it adds color to the tank. For me, any Anubias is a good bet because they are so sturdy and hardy. Apparently I have magic water, because my Anubias plants all grow fairly quickly! My tank is totally low tech.

My top 5: anubias nana, cardemine lyrata, cryptocoryne crispatula, Limnobium laevigatum, Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides. But I do see the value in moss - i'm just not counting them in.

will they all grow from the same substrate? if so, what would you recommend? new to planted tanks by the way. building a 5 gallon nano
@TheyCallMeAni344 жыл бұрын
I'd suggest eco complete and root tabs. It's great because it does come with nutrients so it doesnt mess with your water parameters, but it is great at storing nutrients because of it's high CEC. Also it's not too expensive only $20 on amazon and free shipping. One bag is enough to do a 10 gallon that's what I did

In my 10 gallon tank, I like crinum calamistratum. My betta really likes it! He races around the stems and like to push them. Mine isn't hiding anything, but it does provide a tall branching plant that doesn't block out any light to the other plants. It slow growing and doesn't really require any maintenance. However, planting it was a pain in the rear, and I have to be super careful during water changes to not uproot it. I've had it in sand with root tabs and aquarium soil and it did great either way!

Moss balls don't do well in water over 60 degrees. Marimo or moss balls in the wild are only found in icy water in Iceland, Scotland, Estonia, and Japan. I had 12 moss balls in 10 years and they always ended up looking like a rug covered with algae a few months later. Moss balls are not hardy and they need cold water to do well. Moss balls are algae magnets unless you have a machine to roll them 24-7 in cold water in low light.
@MadCheshireHat6 жыл бұрын
Hmm... Really? I haven't heard that before. I'll have to consider this then... 🤔
