He also knows people tend to favor the most obscure number possible in a "choose a number" game, in an effort to stump the magician. I noticed that, playing along as a girl, my final number wasn't 9, so I figured Ethan only included the directions for guys in this video because that's what was relevant for him. So God help me I went and watched the original video from Rick Lax. The equation for the girl version is equally simple. Again replacing your age with x, the equation is: (X+3+5-X)*2-7. Simplified, that's just (3+5)2-7, which of course equals 9. Also, in the actual video, he pauses a lot to give people time to do the math. I think that this, along with different equations for different genders, is actually an intentional strategy to make it look like magic. The more time that passes and the more numbers their are flying around, the easier it is for people to get confused and forget what math they have already done. If they can't remember what the actual equation was, they won't realize how easy it was for him to "predict" their number.

I'm not defending the FB video but it's not a random number. He is priming you with the math beforehand to get you to do subtraction. He then says pick between 5 and 12. 12-5=7 which is how he arrived on 7. That's also why he asks you not to think about it so he would get your first reaction.
