The Riga FIDE Grand Prix is taking place in the National Library of Latvia from July 12-24 2019. The 16-player knockout is the 2nd of four legs of the 22-player Grand Prix series that will determine two places in the 2020 Candidates Tournament. Players compete in 3 of the 4 tournaments, which each have a 130,000 euro prize fund, with 24,000 for 1st place. There are also from 1 (quarterfinal loser) to 8 (winner) Grand Prix points available, plus an additional point for each match win without tiebreaks. The overall series prize fund is 280,000, with 50,000 for 1st place.
Each round consists of two games of classical chess, with a time control of 90 minutes/40 moves + 30 min to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment from move 1. If the match is tied two 25+10 rapid games are played. If still tied, there are two 10+10 games, then two 5+3. Finally a single Armageddon game is played, where White has 5 minutes to Black’s 4 (with a 2-second increment from move 61) but Black wins the match with a draw. Leading partners of the series are PhosAgro and Kaspersky Lab. Official website: worldchess.com

Hey, question from a 1500 player: In what world is 27 Bf3... not better than 26. Qe3? The way Grischuk did this he lost a piece for seemingly no reason. Bf3 basically forces it as JUST a queen trade, which is way favorable. MVL can't give any useful checks, if he captures the bishop you capture the rook (Still favorable), if he moves the queen you either capture the rook, or you can also move your queen and maintain your material advantage. This move just seems like a huge blunder to me. what am I missing?

I was surprised to see the computer throw out h4 while I analyzed an old opening I used to face in high school: 1. e4 g6 2. d4 b6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. h4 ... in this case Black has wasted so much time, h4 is a really good idea to start aggression on the kingside.

10:43 -- The hasty player will be tempted by Bd3 here in an attempt to save his bishop -- and that would be a disastrous blunder, of course, as Qg4+, Kh2, Rxc2 seizes the queen. 11:03 -- The position seems drawing, but you still shouldn't grant chances. Here, Grischuk forfeited an opportunity to get his king quickly into the center of the board with Kg2 (instead of Nd2), where Rg4+ is answered with Kf3. 11:23 -- Instead of this needless rook-harassing, the intuitively better choice is Ra2 (defending the knight in its central location, as well as getting one's own rook out of its foxhole now that the queens are off). But Grischuk has been holding this game to a draw so far with moves that the engine thinks are second-best, so what do I know? 11:34 -- Maxime had just played Rg4+ to run the White king up against the side of the board on his previous turn. If that was a good move (and it was indeed the best move, in fact the only one in which the game does not immediately head for a 0.00 draw), then why abandon it? Play h5 and box that king in the corner! The game is still drawish, but you're better capitalized to pounce on any inaccuracy by White. For example, if after h5, White plays Nh2 (to chase your rook away), only now do you play Rb4, and White's knight is now very far away from any action, and might as well be another inch farther right, as he is now going to lose the game. If after h5, White plays Rg1, then again Rb4, and now White cannot play Rg4 (attempting to trade his passive rook for Black's active one) because the h5 pawn guards g4 (White is therefore relegated to Kg2 as his best move, as anything else has him at worse than -1 in a still "busy" game with loose pawns waiting to be snatched). 13:05 -- With Ng1, White's losing blunder. Re1 was in fact his only viable drawing line.

Im not sure that is the best continuation but my line of thinking was if king to h1 it made no sense to take the Queen, because then the Knight has No escape route after Bishop takes Queen on e4. Then lets say if Queen takes Bishop on d3 and White replies with pawn to b4 with a discovery attack on the queen, Queen takes Bishop d2 and trade everything off and gain a tempi on the rook on f1? Might be missing something.. if someone has better continuation or other suggestion please educate us 😅

Because after Qxe4 there is no defense versus Qg2 checkmate. You could try f3, but it still doesn't work, Maxime has then Nh3 with check, and the position is completely winning for Black.

I love Ivanchuk, Ding and Anand, but MVL is growing on me! He is the only player other than Carlsen who is so dominant with the black pieces...

I am a fan of Carlsen and I think that he is the strongest player in the history of chess, but I would be glad to see MVL be a strong nr 2 and maybe challenge him for the title

After h4 the water bottle on i5 is really dangerous so MVL has to capture it... otherwise black will face some nasty discoveries and will just end up losing material
