I reviewed this interesting game with my 2300+ teacher and we asked ourselves in the end: what was the black mistake? After analyzing the game, we think that the schema/defense that Poobalasingam chose was not a proper one. He tried a kind of King's indian and closed the center while Simon prepared a flank attack with h4 and h5. We think that black should have tried 3... c5 4. d5 e6 and then play a Benoni defense.

This is a very interesting opening. I don't like to play against the Grunfeld either. After 3.h4, I am wondering if Black can profit from 3..e5!? 4.dxe5 Ng4 and now if White ever plays Nf3, the N@g4 cannot be kicked, so Black can build up pressure with ..Nc6,..Bg7,..Qe7, etc. 4.d5 is interesting though, if Black plays his B to c5 or b4 he leaves massive holes on the K-side. Maybe 4...c5 followed by ..d6..Be7..h6..Kf8..Kg7 ?

Maybe after 3...e5 4 dxe5 Ng4 white has the threat Bg5

I probably would have played h5. and have a pawn chain.,this would not allow an outpost on f5 because of the g6 pawn, which in this game was moved.

That's interesting it might transpose to a grunfeld after Nc3 d5 but after Bg5 !? I think maybe white is better
