There was a guy that committed suicide on the tracks where I work. The train stopped as quickly if not faster than this one. It took them 3 hours to investigate the accident. CSX railroad police came out and had the engineer test the horns, lights and bell even though they knew it was a suicide. It was terrible, the guy was crossing the tracks with a friend when the train was coming. At the last second he suddenly turned around and ran onto the tracks and was struck.

Train brakes are very effective. A mile long train booking 65mph will take a nearly mile to stop in full emergency, the whole train length. A car travelling on a highway at the same speed could take 12-15 times the length of the car itself. Which has the best braking ability?

In the years when I was in law enforcement, I always, always, was told by driver of the vehicle hit, the crossing signals were not operating when the accident occurred. One fool even told me the train crew came to the crossing and turned the signals on! Of course, I always charged the person who was hit by the train. The best one was right after a hurricane, one of the inspectors for an electric company was hit on the tracks at an unguarded crossing. He said the train was not blowing its whistle. Another inspector arrived to say he had been talking to the other inspector, heard a train horn, then the connection was lost.

With that tude the super trucker is lucky he's not the sole occupant of a body bag headed to the morgue. We've had to go back later to retrieve pieces that were missed in the initial recovery-- parts are parts, whether in the big bag with the zipper or a handy little biohazard bag. Doesn't matter if it's a rice grinder, a low rider, a custom cruiser, big truck, or large car-- train wins. That big hood doesn't reflect intuition, experience, or common sense. Newsflash: just the locomotive sitting still can outweigh your shiny little tractor, trailer, and load's typical max allowable weight by 5 times.

Why would you call this dude names? Just remember something, Austin Trains did what any honorable person would have done. He saved the police & NTSB from many hours of trying to figure out what went wrong. There is a difference between right & wrong & making a mistake & when someone has clear proof of this , it is honorable to let others know of this proof so that we can all learn the truth about how mistakes cause accidents. We can learn from those mistakes. The truck driver make a judgement error & ended up on the tracks while the lights were flashing giving a warning that a train was coming. I do not know what the driver was thinking or doing, but he starts to cross the tracks while the lights are clearly flashing & the bells are sounding & the train s also blasting its horn, stops, & than starts backing up. He just wasn't fast enough in getting off the tracks. He needs to take responsibility for his mistake, learn from it, help pay for any damages, & move on.

Can you see earlier in your footage when the truck pulled onto the roadway? I liked your reaction when you heard and then panned to the crossing. "No, no, no NO! NO!!" I particularly like the SD70's headlight refection in the trucks paint in the video frames before impact. I genuinely think driver training should once again include "LOOK, LISTEN, LIVE" 'cause if he'd MERELY listened this could have been COMPLETELY avoided..

yea, also it looked like he was making for a left turn, may not have even looked at the crossing not thinking it would cause interference...just sayin.

Crossing bells and train bells are for pedestrians. They aren't intended to warn vehicles, especially at a distance required to be able to stop in time. The lights should have been enough warning for him. Since the video does not show the truck approaching the crossing, I've tried to hear whether the truck stops for the flashing lights. But it's too hard for me to tell. *frank55025* The cantilever lights were on. The video doesn't show them very brightly because they're not aimed at the camera-they're aimed at the road. And cameras are not perfect, so what the camera sees may not be what the human eye would see. If you can't be absolutely sure the tracks are clear and no trains are coming, then don't cross the tracks. If you can't be absolutely sure that your vehicle will completely fit on the other side of the crossing, then don't cross the tracks. I also thought, at first, he was looking to make a left turn. But I'm skeptical he needed to pull that far forward to be able to make left turn there.

Jason Stearns a P5 is a horn made by Nathan AirChime inc. The P5 that you listened to was a newer P5. The older ones use different material so the pitch is different. Search up Nathan P5 compilation on KZbin.

I could tell the driver wasn't paying attention to the crossing, when he turned towards the road he was driving to, he saw the signal OR the train, he tried his best to back up but it was too late. I'm glad this isn't a trucker trying to beat a train, this is just an accident, he never intended to crash and these crossings should have gates sooner or later.

eggfacing I noticed that too. Beautiful train with no rust or dirt on the freight cars. Brand new fire engine and ambulance. Shiny new tractors for towing the truck away. Even the old downtown buildings look clean and freshly rehabbed. Did I interdimensionally cross over into some kind of la-la land? I gotta get out of my inner big city digs.

I cannot believe that is an unprotected crossing! Like, wut?!? It's in the middle of town, very little not almost no line of sight around the curve for both the semi and the train. Woof! Nice video too. You did the best thing possible on your escape plan, seriously. I typically prefer to stand on the closest corner/edge/sidewalk to the approaching train for this exact mistake. At least the struck vehicle will get hit and move past you, not act as a battering ram to you. Good awareness and I respect that you even tried to yell to the truck to stop, most wouldn't have the spatial/situational awareness you showed here.

Super awesome coverage of the whole situation and not just the accident, very professional. As a retired long distance Trucker of 25 years, I am a firm believer that if a driver does something this STUPID by pulling out there when the signals were flashing then drag his funky butt out of that cab AND BEAT HIM SENSELESS!!!

The driver claimed the crossings weren't working. What a LIAR!! By the sound of that truck's turbo spooling, he CLEARLY was trying to beat the train. Thankfully he came to his senses and stopped before getting T-Boned. What would've been about a 3 minute wait turned into several hours and a trip to the unemployment line, not to mention a fine and possibly jail time. Hopefully he reflects on his decision and learns from it.

There will be no jail time for a simple traffic infraction. The ticket will be failure to obey traffic control device or how ever PA words it. Apparently the fine is $150 and carries no points.

Yes, and it still doesn't work. As we try to make everything safer for idiots, that removes more personal responsibility, and it just makes them even more stupid. Instead of making America safer, it's time to make it more dangerous. There will be two benefits: natural selection will once again eliminate the worst of the idiots, and the rest will once again learn to think for themselves. Safety measures should be limited to protecting people from idiots, not protecting idiots from themselves.

That trucker may have saved his life by backing up a bit, so more of the semi didn't get hit! He still probably got fired though. Flashing red lights doesn't mean to try to cross, especially on blind curves. Someday, people may learn. NOT!
