i think it mostly comes down to comprehension and taste. i have been watching an indian vocal improvisations many years back and only about ten years later i was able to somewhat understand all the things they have been doing. the funny thing is that many people also criticize or make fun of konnakol (mentioned indian vocal music), because it sounds so very different from other forms of vocal music and you can tell, when people don't like something or when they just don't understand it. i'm not saying that you don't understand it (although your first conclusion sort of hints to that), but it was an interesting observation to see similar forms of criticism in those extremely different styles of music.
