HAAS FAMILY ON MOUNT BEACON INCLINE RAILWAY, BEACON NY - 1957
Friends and family-
This 1957 home movie is of my family riding the Incline Railway to the top of Beacon Mountain. This is the highest peak of the Hudson Highlands, located behind the city of Beacon in the town of Fishkill. The movie includes my mother Catherine (Peg), brothers Bruce and Donald, sister Joan, Aunt Markie (Margaret [Whitman] Beauchamp) and Uncle Don Beauchamp. It was filmed by my dad, Lawrence W. Haas, and the music is by my daughter, Anna. Let me know if you recognize anyone, and please share with others...
All the best... David

I remember doing this with my family in the 60's. One time on the way down there we're two older women sitting behind us who started singing, "I left my heart on top of Mt. Beacon". I love those memories. ❤

My family did this when I was young and I didn't recall that much so it was nice to relive it through your family's pictures especially with the lovely music. Thank you.

brielanstr I’m glad you enjoyed - the song was written by my daughter after her grandmother’s death- imagining what her grandmother would have said to her children.

Thanks for sharing David. Hiked up to the top of Mt. Beacon a few months ago, it was steep and a difficult ascent. I wish the railway was still there.

would be nice to bring it back-look what the Poughkeepsie RR bridge walkway did for the valley. Over 1 million have visited (and left a buck or two) I believe people from NYC would love it too. Take Metro North, have a shuttle waiting and watch the crowds come in. Nice home video seems such a nice family. Mom and dad still around? The young ones must be my age now 64

You "Haas" the most poignant home movie videos. Makes me want to be back in much simpler times. I wish someone would take my Dad's old home movies and make them so they can be posted too.

I miss a lot of the good old days but life today is not so bad really. I feel people are just as nice and we are much better informed. We are a smaller world and we have made great strides in so many areas not to mention race relations (yeah still bad but Jim Crow laws in the "simple" days was brutal as was a lot of hidden abuse such as domestic abuse-just saying...) I'm 64 and kinda like the internet, facebook and the many advances we have today

I know what you mean about the simple days. Family's hiding abuse, drinking and other not so Christian like activities for the persona that was put out there. like my parents when I was young and before their divorce when I was 11. I didn't know they were having problems and that all my mother wanted to do is go out and simply get a job and be more a part of the world. But My dad was old school(as well as jealous), and didn't want her to be out there working. He was jealous of the idea of other men possibly making advances on her because she was beautiful and attractive. Anyway. Yeah, I heard a lot of things about people who I thought I knew. But I miss those days for me, because obviously when you're young, you really don't have a care in the world, and I basically was in my own little worlds. And now with the internet and Facebook, it can cause and much trouble as anything. I'm online a lot and it's not healthy. I'd rather be hiking somewhere. Which leads me here and talking about the Mt. Beacon. Much healthier and better for clearing the mind than being here behind this PC. Oh, in your other comment you mentioned about the Walkway. Yeah it is bringing a lot of people to visit and bringing a lot of people together. I think there would be a lot more going on if Albany wasn't such a pain in the rear. For years, every time someone wanted to bring something big to the Hudson Valley, it seems like it always gets shut down before it had a chance. Like a LEGO theme park they were talking about fairly recently and the Hudson Valley was considered for a location. I think that probably got shot down. A lot of things in Newburgh were suppose to happen but didn't pan out either. But they keep putting in stores. and how many more Dunkin' Donuts or Starbucks does one area really need?! geez.

I agree about getting out more. My walking is limited but I always get out. I live in NYC and Wappingers but find it much easier to get around up here so I spend 3 days here and 4 back home in Manhattan. Works out well for my wife and I because we have clear "space" and often we come here to hang out atRedwing park or go for drives. We agreed before marriage we keep both places. As far as the good old days I do agree we had a lot of cool activities. In the Bronx we kids were always outside playing sports or hanging out. Today there is too much organized sports and kids playing cyber games. As far as standard of living-heck I'll take today any day over the past. We were very poor and once we 4 brothers grew up, our standard of living took off. I just like to remind folk the good old days had some hidden "bad stuff"
