These vises are just really well designed, so they can stand up to years of misuse, and a lack of maintenance, but a well-cleaned and lubricated vise is just so smooth and satisfying to use. I pulled out an old vise last week that had been sitting, unused, for years, and it felt like the nut was bound-up. I sprayed some light only on the leadscrew, and worked it back-and-forth for a minute and it came back to life. I then cleaned things out like we did in the video. Doing that kind of maintenance, and then feeling the beautiful results is almost cathartic.

That mill is exactly the one i am learning on right now. Its been 20 years since i operated a cnc (mazac turning centers/mazatrol) so g-code on a mill is a very different animal.

Good video but you missed something about the set screw in the moving jaw. Kurt only uses one set screw in their vises, but I've seen many Kurt clone vises that use two set screws - one inside for adjustment and one outside to lock the inner one. And this is not at all obvious, if you don't know. Also, I would tighten that set screw more than Mark did - I don't want that moving jaw lifting at all, but not so tight that the moving jaw doesn't move smoothly. Thank-you Mark and Haas for these excellent videos.

That is a great point. We'll see people adjusting the runout on their Renishaw Spindle probes, and really struggling sometimes because they don't know that their unit has double setscrews (regular, and backup screw to lock it). A little bit of knowledge can save a lot of frustration :)

@@Stasiek_Zabojca Read the manual? Are you crazy? lol. That conversation is actually how our video department really got some love, and got expanded. The GM was changing a flat tire on his Truck and instead of reaching for the manual, he just went on KZbin. He knew right then that we needed to put some effort into videos. I learned how to run the machine using Manuals though, so my preferred method of learning is probably just reading manuals - but I think that is changing. My first week on the job I had the programmer print out the G-code for the part I was running, and then I walked through the printout, with the Haas Manual.

Pro tip, keep a spare set of O-rings on hand. Grease/coolant will soften them over time and they may break during re-assembly. They are only a few dollars at McMaster. It is not a fun task, but you do notice a change in the performance before/after a rebuild.

@@grahamwaldo331 Almost nothing. The first one was just missing a few seconds of us tightening, and then lightly loosening, the setscrew on our floating jaw. That little detail is pretty important for operators, as it keeps things snug so chips can't get under the jaw, but not so tight that the jaw drags.

What grease is that you’re using? Mobil??

In this video, we were using a Mobil XHP222, as it is what I had at hand. It is an NLGI 2 which means that is has really good anti-washout properties. The XHP222 Special, or even an XHP 322, would have Molybdenum disulfide in them, which would hold up even better against friction, but really any NLGI 2 (marine grade) grease would be great. We don't mention it in this video, but spraying down the leadscrew with a light oil, and running the moving jaw back and forth will also help to keep that center nut happy. We just use Castrol Rustilo DW 90 HF for this, because it is what we have on hand. Our machine coolant actually does a good job of keep that moving jaw nut lubricated, but it is a good idea to clean that screw from chips everyday, and run it all the way in/out with a light oil on it if you are going to store the vise for long periods of time.
