GreedFall REVIEW (50+ Hours Played) - Ambitious Narrative

Little heads-up regarding a big bug! I forgot to reference it in the video itself, but if you're picking this up make sure you hand in the main quest "Old Countries in a New World" BEFORE you hand in "Mystery of the Ancient Ruins". It's a simple dialogue prompt, if you've done this correctly you'll get a new main story quest (something "Prince"). If you do this in the "wrong" order, you won't get it, meaning you can't finish the game! A nasty surprise I ran into a few days back, prompting me to redo about 10-15 hours. The developers should be aware of this and it's easy enough to get around, so it'll probably get fixed soon enough but keep it in mind if you've just started playing yourself.

I'm actually kind of impressed that he was able to make this review without ever mentioning another AA-budget action RPG series with a similar setting: Piranha Bytes' Risen series. Going into this review, I had thought that GreedFall was a realistic RPG about the era of European exploration and colonization. When I saw that it's actually a fantasy setting, it screamed Risen to me! Risen games are my guilty pleasure; they're extremely rough and unpolished... but I absolutely love them! GreedFall reminds me so much of those games that I am now even more interested in it!

Point of note I only showed one "boss" fight in this video. I'd like to keep some semblance of mystery on the others, they're certainly fun to fight (and more so than the one I showed I suppose as this is the most static one).

fun? boss fights are boring as hell, like Spiders' previous games.

I really liked this game. I bought it for the setting and enjoyed the majority of it. I agree with just about everything you said in this review besides side quest pacing. I never minded the backtracking but that's probably just me. Still a good game and a good review of it. Thanks, Haas.

The combat seems a poor imitation of Dragon Age: Inquisition. Guard in that, was only on elite enemies, and they significantly reduced damage taken until you used specific anti-armor abilities.

Greedfall just looks outdated, it looks like an end of cycle PS3 game in many ways. This game should have been $40 not $50, and also had 3 to 6 months more development time.
