My brother was an Air Force pilot, then a pilot for American Airlines. I helped him study to be qualified to fly the 767 and couldn't believe the tiny details he had to know. The movies that show the captain knowing what all the plane's wires are and where they all lead is accurate. The flight crews have knowledge way beyond what I can grasp.

When the General says "Your kind is headed for extinction" to Maverick he was referring to pilots in general. Because pilots are becoming obsolete due to both man and ai piloted drones.

There was no CGI in the first one as it would be another 10 years or so before CGI bece a thing. The opening sequence with the aircraft carrier was real with cooperation from the Navy, not CGI. Destroying the guard shack as the Dark Star took off (real plane with CGI for the Dark Star), anyway, it wasn't planned, but it worked so they kept it in the film. Program was gonna be cancelled. Other than as a museum piece, the plane wasn't worth anything so exploding it wasn't as big a problem as you might think. Penny Benjamin, mentioned in the first movie....he went ballistic with her. The wheel is that size so it can be reached from either side of the boat, and the extra leverage helps too. There are single and two-seat F-18's. Depends on their mission which one is needed. In the 1970's, the US and Iran were allies, and they bought several F-14's. They are the only country outside the US to operate the F-14. This was the plane Maverick flew in the first Top Gun. And yes, it was really Tom Cruise flying the P-51 at the end. It is, in fact, his personal aircraft.

Why an F-14 is there? There is only one country today that is both running an illicit uranium enrichment program, and is still flying surplus F-14's. I RAN TO the only possible answer.

Pro tips....the plane at the end is Tom's! The woman he's seeing now was mentioned in the first, as him having relations with the admirals daughter! Rooster really learned to play piano! The general was in the girst jet flight space movie, The Right Stuff! He was also flight director in Apollo 13! The navigator Bob, is the real life son of Bill Pullman, who played the pilot president in independence day! Hangman so impressed Tom, he told the actor he should get his pilot's license, so he did! Then he played a true story pilot in ww2/Korea as a pilot who always flew with another black pilot! Iceman here is Val kilmer from the first, and he really does have throat cancer, and his voice was mostly AI dubbed, for this. The actors flew in teal jets, 90 minutes a day for 3 months because they had to control their cameras, microphones, other equipment, during flight shots. Some of them got jet fuel blood poisoning!

Wow!!! Where this movie was filmed in originally started in the desert is where my husband or ex-husband was stationed between 1989 and 1992.. we lived in twentynine palms and I think this was Joshua tree or the small little town just south of there. .😊 Bringa back memories of little bitty roadrunners that are small and I had expected them to be bigger. There are a lot of coyotes out there and when taking your dog or pup out to go to the bathroom and especially at night I had to be right there to guard my baby dog until he grew up to be a big German Shepherd to make sure a coyote did not grab him. It is hot out there and during the summer between 9th June and especially June through the 1st of September it was nothing to be 125° Fahrenheit during the day and then it would drop down to 80° at night because it's much cooler overnight in the desert. It's dusty and it's so DRY SO ESPECIALLY DURING THE SUMMER THE HEAT AND THE DROUGHT OF THE DESERT WOULD CAUSE YOU TO ALWAYS SHOCK YOURSELF WHEN YOU GO TO GET GAS IN YOUR CAR. Gosh I hated that.

@0:53 Yeah the cables on the rear of the Carrier are to stop aircraft in a short amount of space on the Carrier deck. Tough skill to master! @1:35 Those are old pictures of Maverick and Goose when they were younger. @9:31 Penny is Penny Benjamin, and she was mentioned in the first Top Gun when they were getting chewed out on the Carrier at the beginning of the first film. It's implied they dated before.| @18:44 The Ship tilts due to the relative wind direction - in this case 'Beam Reach' - directly from the side. And yes, the wheel is large for torque, so you can move a larger rudder easier. @23:00 Iceman's actor, Val Kilmer has lost his voice due to aggressive throat cancer, the voice they use when he actually speaks is computer generated. He also played 'Doc Holliday' in 'Tombstone' @28:13 Yes Bird strikes are very dangerous to aircraft. If your aircraft flies through a flock of birds there's a chance your engines ingest too many of them, fatally damaging the aircraft. Look up a video on "Sully - Miracle on the Hudson" This pilot saved a lot of people by landing the plane on the Hudson river after it ingested birds while taking off. @41:55 While the adversary country in this movie is fictional, we did sell a number of F-14 Tomcats to Iran, who still use them today! And yeah, this was the Aircraft he flew in the first film. @47:45 They are erecting an emergency Barricade Net. Any time an aircraft is not going to be able to land normally due to some equipment failure, they put this net up to catch the aircraft. It causes damage to the planes, but they can be repaired. @49:02 Normally Military Pilots aren't also mechanics, but in the case where pilots have their own civilian aircraft, it's not uncommon for them to learn how to work on it. In real life, that old WWII plane belongs to Tom Cruise. It's a P-51D Mustang, and they used him flying it for scenes in this film. That is NOT CGI :)

The first one was 1986 when I graduated from high school and this one came out in 2022 I think so it was about 36 years . I loved the first one but it's only because I love the Navy and the fighter pilots and the music was great but the second one was better!!!!! Tom Cruise was in so many mission impossible movies and other stuff and many many years ago back in the 1990s he learned how to fly a plane and he does a lot of his stunts!!! He can definitely fly a plane and when Henry Cavill worked with Tom Cruise in one of the mission impossible movies back around 2019,, he said he expected to meet a cocky arrogant guy but he really was not. He did say Tom Cruise was a perfectionist but he was very very protective of his employees and he wanted to make sure they had jobs and they kept their jobs. I can't blame him for that . What made the second movie better is from the beginning of the plot was he was being selected to go train people that had already been through top gun school and graduated like in the top three of their classes and he was going to choose which ones went on this mission so it made more sense than what happened in the first movie. In the first movie it was really emotional and sad because his friend got killed accidentally and he lost his way because of grief and he didn't graduate first in the class but he graduated second likely because of that grief but the guy with whom he had so much competition during top gun School ended up becoming an admiral and chose him personally to lead this training at top gun to pull off this particular mission because Iceman said Maverick was the only one who could do it... He was a damn good pilot and he was always known to take risks but he was older more mature and he was going to make these people work as a team but Maverick was upset because he was not supposed to go on the mission with these people and he wanted them to be able to go out there with him so they wouldn't go out alone.. from the beginning they had a plot about what to do where is in top gun the first movie, the guy's graduated and then all the sudden in the middle of their graduation ceremony they get some kind of notice they got to run off and do the special mission so it was just okay for the movies but it was really just something that wasn't fitting in and seemed a little fake to me even back then..

Only country currently flying the F-14 is Iran. They are also the only country we exported this fighter to. So, yes I guess this facility was in Iran if they want to be consistent with history. Question is where did Iran get 5th Gen Fighters. Also the ground would not confuse the targeting system on a 5th Gen fighter or even a 4rth Gen Fighter. However, electronic jammers could. And if an opponent did that air braking maneuver to avoid a missile and exposed that much of his jet to you, you would switch to guns and plaster him. It is unlikely that maneuver would save you from a missile in the first place. the distance those missile detonations on the flares seemed to occur for many of the scenes, the planes would be toast. Air to air missiles are proximity weapons-they detonate when the are close to you and riddle the plane with shrapnel. They never deployed chaff which would also be used but if they did, it would not make as cool a movies shot. Flares work for infrared guidance while chaff works with radar guidance. Short range missiles are more commonly infrared and long range are radar. Some long range missiles are radar until they get close then infrared for the terminal guidance phase. With a 5th Gen, you would try to use a long range shot, and try to stay out of the effective detection range of your opponent. While the first two 5th Gen’s may not have known it was a foe and got close, that last one would not have come in head to head that way. He would have fired from distance.

The thing about those hooks on the plains when they land is to grab the wire so they can stop because they're going so fast that the plane can't stop fast enough on its own on an aircraft carrier. There's a really good movie DEVOTION!! IT'S ABOUT THE KOREAN WAR AND IT SHOWS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN SOMEBODY LANDS A LITTLE BIT TOO SHORT OR THEY DON'T LAND RIGHT ON THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER. SAD . IT'S BASED ON A TRUE STORY AND IT IS A BEAUTIFUL MOVIE THAT I JUST HAD TO WATCH SO I GOT PARAMOUNT JUST TO WATCH THAT MOVIE AND THEN I'VE BEEN WATCHING SO MANY MOVIES ON. PARAMOUNT WHEN I HAVE THE TIME BUT DEVOTION IS EXCEPTIONAL AND HAS ONE OF THE ACTORS FROM THIS MOVIE IN IT. GLENN IS HIS FIRST REAL NAME BUT HE'S THE COCKY YOUNG PILOT IN TOP GUN MAVERICK AND HE'S A BIT ARROGANT BUT HE IS ONE OF THE TOP PILOTS IF NOT THE BEST.. BY THE END OF THE MOVIE OR TOWARDS THE END HE STARTS TO REALLY WAKE UP BECAUSE HE REALIZES WHEN THEY'RE GOING THROUGH THIS TRAINING THAT MAVERICK HAS SEEN THINGS THAT THEY'LL NEVER SEE.

Tom Cruise iirc can actually fly a fighter jet, and for this film in particular to make the flight scenes more realistic actually had the entire cast learn how to actually fly them. With Rooster's actor stating they were flying so much, when he needed some blood work done it came back with traces of jet fuel
@Rob_F8F

The actors, including Tom Cruise, were in the back seat of the F/A-18Fs. So they did fly in the actual jets, but they were not piloting them. Tom Cruise can fly the WW2-era P-51 fighter. The plane that Maverick and Penny flies in at the end of the movie is Cruise's private P-51 and Cruise is piloting it.
