My great uncle was the driver of this exact tank in WW2. Him and his crew were killed by the Hitler youth using a Panzerfaust (German Anti-Tank Round Launcher) When they were taking the German city of Leipzig on April 18th 1945. He was 25 years old and a member of the 741st Tank battalion attached to the 2nd. Infantry Division. My great uncle died 17 days before the German Field marshal Wilhelm Keitel had the German Army surrender on 8 May 1945. My great uncle started on the Normandy beaches and was so close to making it out alive. R.I.P. Uncle George.

Jesus does say to turn the other cheek, but this is a metaphor for letting go of your ego and pride. Basically it means most things aren’t worth fighting for. Jesus also tells us that if you don’t own a sword to sell your cloak and buy one. Meaning self defense is righteous.

The green and red lights you see when they are shooting machine guns a called tracer rounds and are placed about every 10 rounds. They’re built with a small pyrotechnic charge in their base. When fired, the pyrotechnic composition is ignited by the burning powder and burns very brightly, making the projectile trajectory visible to the naked eye. This allows the shooter to visually trace the trajectory of the projectile and make necessary ballistic corrections. As for the German soldier letting Norman go at the end, I’ve always felt that he was a lot like Norman and hated killing so, he did what his conscience told him to do.

During the war the age would be dropped to 18 and in increments raised to 46. If you were fit,fit you went to combat units regardless of age. Norman is going through what most recruits experience if they are sent to an experienced unit as a replacement. The original guys have already lost friends and aren't feeling very friendly about new arrivals, who don't know anything. They also don't want to get to know the replacement because replacements die -again, because they don't know anything. What makes it worse is that this late in the war, all the combat units had taken losses and were short of men, so they were shoving half-trained recruits forward to fill the gaps. Norman arrives at the camp after 8 weeks in the army=he must have been shipped out immediately after finishing basic training, without any advanced training, because crossing the atlantic and getting to the front would have taken a couple of weeks.

When you in the army you get qualified to use a basic rifle, other weapons have training on how to use them, that said if youre a clerk or whatever basically the only time you ever touch a weapon is in basic training, after that.... Basic training usually consists of basic survival skills, learning drill movement, the processes in which the army uses to do business, some weapon time, and mostly just how to be in the army. After that is usually job specific training so if you are infrantryman or tank crewman you go do another course to learn how to do all the skills related to that. Mightve been a lil different in the 40's but its more or less the same

What you have to understand about Christians, it's that we make a clear distinction between those who devotes their lives to god, and the commoners who are "secular", which means "live in the century". That's why often, you will find people not necessarily abiding to strict religious principle, contrary to clerics who will apply them 100%. Ex: we know we shouldn't drink by religious principles, but we still do, it's in the culture. Now at first you would think that it makes us hypocritical, and that most of the population just don't follow God, but the principle is that true goodness comes from the conscious choice between good and evil. In other words, you need to have free will and not be forced into religion. It's also a recognition that we are all sinners, and that our clerics are there to lead us to be better people, but that we don't have to be clerics ourselves, just good men. If drinking makes you a bad men, you have to stop. If not and you're able to control it, then it's okay (but in most of the times not preferable). So there's a lot of nuances in our approach to religion, and you'll see secular people sometimes bring it up as a moral perspective, a guideline to do good, but at the end of the day, only priests are bound to strict literalist behavior/clothes/etc. It's God's task to judge us in the end, not other people. Obviously, in this movie, the guy played by Shia Leboeuf is more religious than others, but he's still not a priest, he's secular, hence why takes a last sip of alcohol like his brothers for his final stance while reciting bible verses to inspire them. He's being a good and pure man, even in his sinners clothes, and we are hopeful that God will recognize that, because it was the rightful thing to do in this very moment.

The German tanks were not really all that technologically superior, most were about on par with the Sherman but the Sherman was built for easy of manufacture and maintenance plus it had to fit into the logistical needs of moving large amounts of equipment across oceans. The Germans didn't have that issue and they needed more defensive tanks to fight superior numbers on both fronts. The Panther and Tiger tanks did have better armour though the latter Shermans were about on par with the Tiger I for effective frontal armour but the Tigers had much bigger guns. However, there were very few Tigers, not even that many Panthers, the majority of the tanks they faced were PzIV's and SPGs(tank destroyers), which the Sherman could easily deal with.

The green light you saw were tracers. Every third round is a tracer so machine gunners can see where their rounds are going. German tracers were green, the US were red.

53:36 Most Christian denominations allow drinking alcohol. Mormons and Amish forbid it, and most others frown on excess drunkenness, but drinking is generally allowed.

This is a story about a group of men who are in the process of losing their humanity. At the end, they sacrifice themselves to save others. Also, notice, at the end shot, they died on a cross.

88cm? That's a bit big isn't it? Almost a meter. I think you mean 8.8cm or the more common expression for calibres, 88mm. In this case it's the short 88mm/8.8cm
