The chained cannonballs are called chain shot, they were used usually to cut massive holes in the sails of the ship or to take out the main columns holding the mast basically making the enemy an easy stationary target for other cannons with other cannonballs. The sticks they pulled out were oars to be able to pick up speed when not having favorable wind direction.

Awsome movie. Remember this is a trilogy. They have made more after the first three, but the first three are connected to each other making a trilogy. The others (two if I remember) are disconnected and to me not worth to be seen. Johnny Depp, the actor who plays Jack Sparrow, is also very famous in Hollywood, and he acted in several awsome movies in the last 40 years. He is famous to create characters from scartch with his acting.

Black pearls are extremely rare in nature that it is considered to be a bad omen. Quite odd but for some reason bad events have happened whenever a person found one according to some of the areas who rely on eating clams, oysters, abalone, mussels, and scallops. I once found a pink pearl but nothing special happened. I never will expect to find a black pearl myself.

Loved watching this movie AGAIN, with you too. The Pirates of the Caribbean ride in Disney World depicts some of these scenes, like the dog holding the keys and the Pirates begging for the dog to come. Someday maybe you can see that at Disney World for yourselves! Next time, can you guys turn the sound UP on the movie PLEASE, it was very quiet compared to your voices and I had to keep turning it up and down. Thanks!

These movies are technically fantasy, based on all the old legends and folklore about pirates, rather than the real history. The next two in the trilogy are great… They ended this the way they did because they hoped to make more, but didn’t know if they would get to. They gave it an easy open ended happy ending. The next one is my favorite of the three. If you think of it as tall tales, fantasy, or legends the way some of these stories used to be told, with exaggeration and folklore type elements, the physics and even the comedy, the bigger than life type of character that is Jack Sparrow, all makes more sense. ☺️ The stunts they did with the ships are so good too. These were all filmed in the Caribbean around and near the Bahamas.

Norrington accepted Elizabeth’s choice, I don’t think he saw it as Will stealing her, but simply that she didn’t love him and was never going to be happy with him. Plus, their romance leaves a sour taste in many modern Americans mouth because he knew her since she was a child and he was a grown man. No, it’s not realistic, especially for that time, he would have most likely forced her to marry him and had Will killed, but this is a pg-13 family movie, and not supposed to be that realistic.

Captain Jack was doomed to a life of a pirate when he chose to mutiny and steal the pearl, which was a slave ship. The cargo he stole was a boatload of slaves. When asked why, he said "people ain't cargo mate". Freeing slaves is his main crime. Also if you look carefully, you can see the reason for his strange behavior on his skin. They put makeup on him to simulate syphilis, which is supposed to be attacking his brain. He likely started off a very intelligent man. This is also why women slap him all the time.

once upon a time, there was a beautiful, young actress trying to become famous in hollywood. she was so gorgeous, charming, and intelligent that she could get any man or woman to fall in love with her. but this young actress was completely insane. she was able to hide it for a long time, but eventually, one by one, people saw beyond her beauty and learned she was really a monster. once she knew the monster inside of her was exposed, she would become violent, forcing people to abandon her in order to save themselves. but this was unacceptable to this insane young woman, so she would set out to destroy those who abandoned her in any way that she could. one of these people was a movie star, the most famous of all the people who loved her. but he also abandoned her. she took her revenge by trying to destroy him, just like all the others. she decided to make up terrible lies about him, and she told the world these lies. and they infected every part of this man's life, including his movies. aaaaaand that's why there are no more Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

I bet you guys would like Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, with Russell Crowe from Gladiator, and Paul Bettany. It takes place roughly 100 yrs after this one (1815, I think, during the Napoleonic Wars) and is set almost entirely aboard a ship. It's a fantastic movie, based on a series of books, and is considered one of the most historically accurate films around. Russell Crowe is also in the movie American Gangster, with Denzel Washington, directed by Ridley Scott (who also directed Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven). It's a biographical crime film loosely based on the criminal career of Frank Lucas, a gangster who smuggled heroin into the United States on American service planes returning from the Vietnam War. It's also a fantastic movie.

Since we're talking about pirates, I always found it funny that movies don't talk about pirates from other areas of the world. China had a full pirate armada raising hell during the Napoleonic era, southeast asian tribes and kingdoms raided ships all the way to the invention of steam-powered ships. And to top it all off, North Africa had multiple pirate slave states back by the Ottomans that left the powers of Europe shaking in their boots and paying tribute until the U.S. decided it was better to spend millions in defense than a cent in tribute. Why aren't we covering this hollywood? Come on! Step to it!

This will always be my favorite Pirates of the Caribbean movie, it didn't romanticize pirates and showed how brutal pirates were. Sadly the later films tragically steps away from this, and you wouldn't get to see 'brutal' pirates again really until the 4th film. Basically I think the original trilogy kind of lost it's way.

Even back in those days, a decent ship with decent canons, off the shore, could demolish a whole city. Nowadays, an American Destroyer or Super Nuclear Carrier? They can turn a city into melted metal, rubble, smoke, and extinction. We sank half of Iran's Navy in 8 hours in the '80s. This isn't a joke...

About the stealing of the fianceè, yes: maybe for those times he would be considered weird and too much understanding, even for UK people, but the Hollywood movies are all filtered with the present "western" culture and laws about that, where in several countries combined marriages are illegal, because it's faking a contract of mutual love and support.

It's kind of warped the way these movies establish early on that pirates, the guys who cheat, pillage, murder and steal however it serves their interests, are the good guys. This cute little girl is told how they punish pirates with a "short drop and a sudden stop" and she looks horrified, as if a pirate would never do anything so terrible.. And through the cuteness of this little girl and the obvious coldness of the guy telling her that, we the audience are suddenly pirate-lovers.
