The realism ≠ perfect is a thing I struggle to explain to people about zoos in general. Also why I stick to sandbox. Realistically, a zoo is going to keep things on the smaller side- Because costs, because land availability, because guest views, because sanitary reasons, and because the keepers have to have a lot of control over where the animals are for veterinary / husbandry reasons. Healthy, clean, and financially sustainable is going to trump space every time. Sometimes, acceptable/safe ≠ natural. Our "natural" environment and lifestyle as homo sapiens is Africa, and running around in a loincloth with a wooden spear to catch our food, but I don't see anyone volunteering to go back to that. I love seeing exhibits in PZ that mirror reality. It's not Planet Forest or Planet Savannah, it's Planet Zoo.
