As a NYR fan since the late 60's, the 78-79 NYR's remain as one of my favorites. Playoff win over NYI, the best team in the league, was amazing. Ooo la la Sassoon.

So much for the seventies. So much has changed, it's amazing that teams that didn't exist 10 years ago are now the dominant forces in the league - Isles, Philly, soon the Flames and the Oilers. On the other hand, the teams that had ruled the show for years before, are fading - Habs would still be great, but probably'd never be so feared and dominant again. Wasn't born in the eighties yet, but it's still my favourite time in the NHL.

In one of the Rock em sock em videos, Don Cherry explained how he messed up the too many men call. Rough quote "Donny Marcott had orders to shadow Lafluer and stay with him as long as Guy stayed on the ice. Guy stayed out for 4 straight shifts in a row. when he came off, the lines were confused and so was I and two bruins jumped on." So it was pretty much superstar Guy doing it again.

Wasn't it around this time when old Soviet head coach Viktor Tikhonov said Gainey was the "best all-around player in the world"? I don't know it that is true or Tikhonov was just blowing smoke but if he meant that then that is some serious praise.

New York quietly turned things around this season after those unfavorable trades from earlier seasons. If I have my history correct, it's impressive that a depleted Jets managed to beat the Oilers for the last Avco, though at this hour I may not.

I wonder if Montreal's current woes can be called "The Goalie Curse" due to how both Dryden and Roy left and changed the fortunes of the team twice. Dryden may have decided to go into politics, but first, he spent the Winter of 1980 as the color commentator for ABC network's coverage of the Lake Placid Winter Olympics' hockey games. He was with Al Michael calling the Miracle on Ice game.

Losing Price right now, at least while on LTIR is hurting the Habs right now. He was like the Carey Price of old during that magical run to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2020-2021. Sure, other bad moves also hurt them, but Price's issues hurt them much more.

The winner of the Jack Adams Trophy was left out again. Thanks to him leading his team to its first regular season title in franchise history, it would go to Al Arbour of the New York Islanders. However, it was just foreshadowing of bigger and better things soon to come for the franchise.

I remember that game 7 between Montreal and Boston. Montreal pretty much dominated, but Gilles Gilbert stood on his head in net for Boston and was even #1 star and got a standing O from the Forum crowd. A great game. I think the ref had to make that call, btw. After Montreal tied it, they just had too much momentum.
@adk46er52035 жыл бұрын
I think the story is that the ref gave them a few seconds to fix but did not happen. When you watch the video you see all the hab fans standing up and yelling about it. And fans usually do not catch these things that quickly.

Hey Hockey Guy. The Bruins arguably have the best set of defensemen all time. How about a video on great Bruins' defensemen? Shore, Orr, and Borque are obvious. Who would be the 4th?

Probably either Brad Park or Chara, but you could also argue the Habs, with a top 6 pairing of Robinson and Savard, Lapointe and JC Tremblay, and Doug Harvey with Tom Johnson

Butch Goring - Center from the Kings. They traded Billy Harris (25 -30 goal right wing) and Dave Lewis (solid defensive defenseman). Butch could score a bit and kill penalties. He also had some speed and had a helmet that was about 10 years old. He is now their color guy on TV. Sometimes he screws up some words but he is honest and knows his hockey. Sometimes in between periods their is a video of him on skates demonstrating things and taking about the game. He is about 70 but he looks like he is still in good shape.
@adk46er52035 жыл бұрын
I am not sure they can make that trade until they get Ken Morrow off the US Olympic team. He played right away and that gave them some depth in the playoffs.
