As a LONG TERM owner of a 74' CB750 I will also personally attest to the FACTORY AIRBOX... I've WASTED A LOT OF TIME trying to find alternatives to the Stock Airbox...and that was ALL...WASTED TIME. The Factory Box is what you want to run... The engine runs SO MUCH BETTER with the Stock Box...Probably for all of the reasons mentioned in your video. So it is very good advice here to tell everyone to go with the Standard Setup...Don't waste your time like we did... Go with that Stock Box...you will be Glad you did. Trust Us.

Really enjoy how meticulous you are and I love these bikes. Had a 69 before Vietnam , then a 74 when I returned and now ride a mint 76 with original exhaust I bought off Ebay from a Yank who didn't ride much in Indianapolis ;] . here in Florida we wear bikes out with so much great riding season. BTW I clean the air box with Armor all or tire foam Take care my friend and thanks again. Semper Fi from Pensacola

So another benefit of running the stock air box is the reduction of sucking noise from the carbs as you accelerate.

Do you expect the carbs will need to be synced again, given the change to the stock air box? Great video by the way, I started restoring a 74 CB750 about the same time this series began and your vids have provided encouragement and inspiration over the course of my project.
@DeanSegovis8 жыл бұрын
+djt64r Not because of the box, but they will because of engine break in.

Even with perfect jetting, pods only work well at full open throttle. Air boxes use a physical property called Heimholtz resonance, and work better across the entire rev range. This is why even MotoGP and all racing bikes use big airboxes. Cafe racers use pods solely for aesthetics.
@hochstetler7 жыл бұрын
Dean I recently found your videos and have been binge watching them over the past couple of days. They are great! Quick question though. Going back to one of your earlier videos didn’t you say your jets were 150 or 160? Something in that range. Wouldn’t that explain why the previous owner had the pods? I am a novice in this stuff and could be commenting on something completely unrelated. And I apologize if this is covered in a future video that I haven’t watched yet.

you forgot to mention about the stock airbox being a helmholtz resonator which will make the engine suck more air in at cetrain rpms (resonant frequencies). the only way the pods could achieve this is by having the same chamber volume (between filter and carb) as the stock airbox.

Was there a rubber gasket that sat along the bottom edge of the top part....to create a better seal when you put both pieces together?
@davec52235 жыл бұрын
....and what did Ichi charge you to rejuvenate those velocity stacks? You can buy new one's for 10 bucks a pop. I just replaced mine along with the rubber manifold intake ones as well. Stacks were a bit stiff. The intake boots were okay and I probably could have re used them, but since I had already bought a whole new set I put them on the bike. Glad the previous owner of my bike kept the stock air box.... I wouldn't have known the difference between that a pods when I bought it. Thanks for educating me. I've learned a ton from these videos, you gave me the confidence to take the carbs off the bike and tinker. (I'm not mechanically inclined at all. At least I haven't been up until now.) I'm getting ready to put the carbs back on in the morning....hope it still runs.

Will the mods you did during your engine rebuild portion of this series be affected by running with the air box? From what I can remember without watching again, your engine isn't exactly stock.
@DeanSegovis8 жыл бұрын
+MrGyoza6 I installed aluminum connecting rods but they don't change the displacement so it's essentially still stock as far as the carb tuning is concerned.

Everything you say about the advantages of a stock airbox is absolutely correct, but there's one additional advantage. If you've ever driven one of these with a touring fairing and no airbox, you'll hear it. The stock airbox muffles the intake noise. Even without a fairing, you'll hear the difference. It sounds tough at first with individual exposed filters, but tiresome after a while.
