Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign salivary gland tumor.
It is a benign tumor comprising of neoplastic epithelial and myoepithelial cells in a stroma showing a variety of mesenchymal components.
Due to the presence of epithelial and varied mesenchymal components, it was thought to develop from multiple germ layers and hence, was also referred to as "mixed tumor".
