Here in Cologne it's always a roll with butter, raw minced Pork which is preseasoned with salt and pepper. This includes a good portion of chopped onions. The only option is "with lid" "mit Deckel", wich means a bun a top on the bun if you like to have more bun. Pickelded Cucumber is not a traditional thing - maybe it is tasty - but here nobody would try it on a classic "Mettbrötchen". There is a relatively easy way to find a shop that sells good Mettbrötchen. Look for craftsmen when they get their breakfast. This is the shop where you have to go. These are usually butcher shops or real bakeries and in the best case both shops are next to each other. There you get the Mettbrötchen, the meat loaf, etc. that you want and that is authentic

Dude, you have to buy this at a real Metzgerei. This is not Mett. This is Mettsausage. Gas stations sell this because they are easy to prepare and keep longer "fresh" without ever having been fresh. It´s like nutella, or honey. They take it out of a artifial casing and put it on the bread.

Pickles and no Onions. People from Berlin are truly crazy. 😆 Might be time to look for a good butcher shop that also serves food if you want a standard Mettbrötchen. They also often serve rustic cheap filling meals.

No onions is not the traditional Berlin style at all. Chopped onions and pickles, possibly egg wedges and foremost lots of black pepper is the the way to go.

Raw minced meat with onions tastes so good! I always used to eat raw minced meat when my mum was making meatballs.

Nice memories from your childhood, I remember when I ate dough when we baked cinnamon buns 😄😄

ok, here comes my personal version of it: I usually buy 500g Mett, adding chopped onions and a raw egg to it, as well as some spices like pepper, cayenne, paprica and salt, mix it and then i spread it over my Brötchen. That´s how real men use to eat it^^ Harder, faster, eat, me, raaaaaaawww - Heavy Mettal xD

Ok, so the onions are missing, but at least the ratio of Mett and bread on this one looks good.

If you happen to discover a serious german butcher, you might try it all over again 😂 And there you can order as you please: Thic layer of butter or a thin one, onions, cucumber as prefered

This honestly looks like a very sad Mettbrötchen with those 2 tiny slices of pickle... I can imagine that a pickle may taste good with it, but if I had the choice, I´d always go with onions...

Yes onions is the major ingredient for this dish 👍

Nur noch halbe mettbrötchen und ohne Zwiebeln. Es wird nur noch gespart am Brötchen und Belag und trotzdem sau teuer.

Please don't call it Mettbrötchen in Berlin. It's Hackepeter and nothing else :) For my opinion, the two variants, with cucumbers or with onions are both common.

Differently between the regions?

@@dananna8614 Wikipedia says: "Mett (German: [mɛt] ⓘ), also known as Hackepeter (Northern Germany, Eastern Germany and Berlin), is a preparation of minced raw pork seasoned with salt and black pepper that is popular in Germany. ..." At the german Wikipedia-site you also get told, that in West-Berlin it would be called "Hack" or "Mett" and in East-Berlin "Hackepeter" is common. But this I can't confirm. Everyone, who was born in West-Berlin called it "Hackepeter". You should also have a look at a "Mettigel" or "Hackepeter-Igel", which could be a bit surprising for tourists :)
@dananna8614Күн бұрын
@ thanks for explaining 🙏 about mettigel, we have a children’s version: mashed potato with small sausage as spines😄

I feel so sorry about your sad Mettbrötchen expierences. The best way to make the perfect luxury Mettbrötchen is to get minced pork (called 'Hackepeter' in Berlin) from the butcher and bread rolls from the baker. Then top with chopped onions and gherkins, boiled egg wedges and plenty of black pepper.
@dananna86143 күн бұрын
We will try to make this at home then, thank you so much for your tips 👍 stay tuned for homemade mettbrötchen 😃
