"That's a pretty long password for someone who doesn't know the difference between a pdf and an executable" throwing some SHADE
@wewoor
@wewoor 4 жыл бұрын
It's very true but presumably it also opened something that looked like a document with instructions on how to make a "safer" password, which incidentally would help the hacker once that pattern shows up in the log. (my amateur take on it, your comment was the only one i saw about that clip)
@misschief4283

It could have been a PDF file with an embedded executable, since it is possible to embed an executable in a PDF file and launch it (it was done in 2010 without exploiting any vulnerabilities, with JS disabled), these days it mostly depends on the reader used to open the PDF but certainly PDF readers present other vulnerabilities, ebooks also present similar problems (for the same reason).

Miss Chief It’s easily debunkable as you can see the file types under a Details listview on windows folders. Even if you spoof the file extension by changing the binary hexadecimals using slack space methods. It’s also common sense... If your company has been hacked and it’s the panic in the inside because there are hackers who took employees identities, any brain with a IQ of +10 should be suspicious when receiving that kind of emails.

KZbinrs really need to account for their viewer-base. The younger, the more likely they are to not know what a white hat is. "Hackers" is still my favourite movie. I never liked the visuals (I was a script kiddie) when I was younger, but found out years later when it was finally released on DVD, that the visuals were meant to show how a hacker can easily visualise everything. In particular, the final hack scene with the building style representing file servers, is basically they can just walk through like a library and find/take what they want easily. I think it was a nice touch on the BS required for hollywood, but true to the nature.

Hackers is one of my all-time favorite movies. However, when combined with the fact that I wasn't feeling well at the time, the simultaneous and overlapping of accuracy and inaccuracy once gave me a nosebleed. Seriously. The accurate hacking is represented by some of the wildest and most potentially misleading visuals I have ever seen. Spending a couple hours rummaging through databases for a file is shown by flying through a virtual city. Sure, the cool factor is off the charts, and it well represents the thrill, but it just perpetuates the "computers are magic" attitude Hollywood is only now just kinda sorta getting over. And that goes for most of the scenes of actual hacking.

The only thing I'd split hairs over was the Tron:Legacy bit, but that's more or less an argument over whether exploiting a physical system counts as social engineering. It's definitely part of hacking, otherwise DEF CON wouldn't do lockpicking contests. I'd put that on the editor though, seeing as including something like that would be like me trying to explain why network engineers will argue over what layers are actually responsible for the issues they resolve on the job.
@MrSlowestD16

Yeah, a large part of pen testing is physical access, it's a perfectly normal attack vector; so while not in front of a computer, it's definitely "hacking" in the more general type. There's a good # of pen testing ted talks on YT where they talk about physical access they've gained in the past via social hacking, lock picking, etc., which some may not consider 'hacking' at first glance. Very interesting stuff.

Actually, messing up with traffic lights is likely not very realistic. I remember seeing a picture of a traffic lights controller and there was an absurd amount of hardware for just a few lights. Some of that hardware was for remote access, fair enough. But it turns out that, due to the danger of those lights misbehaving, there's like a second computer which checks the main one is operating correctly, ie. making sure that there is no green light on both ways, minimum times are met, etc. So, even if someone were to take control of the main computer, I doubt they would be able to cause any accident. I don't have a direct experience with this kind of system, but having redundancy and cross-checking computers is common practice in critical systems.

One tool worth mentioning that was used in The Matrix was the use of Nmap, which is a tool designed to sniff ports and fingerprint the OS it detects, obviously for the purpose for the movie they masked it under a different name. The CLI elements of what they showed is very Nmap-like, since it's a tool that can function as both GUI and CLI. I will say however that OS Fingerprinting with Nmap is very poor and is often very inaccurate, since it's unable to properly identify the OS and the version a system is currently running. Scanning against a Linux machine will often yield results like you're running Linux with 2.6.3 kernel as some generic Linux OS like an embedded system like RedHat or some other, when in reality you are really running Linux with 5.6.7 kernel or greater with lets say Ubuntu or Arch Linux.

@D not really... I don't consider a "formatting" style to be code but that depends on your definition of code. And seeing "code in terminal" doesn't even make sense... does he mean the output that the code produces?

I wish they showed the part in hackers where he calls the security guard, pretends to be a worker, and overwhelms him with garhon to him get (if I'm remembering correctly) their modem IP. Phishing is such a real security threat and they explained it really well.

Yeah, Wired shoulda put his name in the video title. I almost didn't watch, since I knew as a computer security professional, I wouldn't be learning anything, but if I'd known it was ma boy Samy, I would've been all over it. That being said, TV & movie hacking is usually so bad it inspires me to laugh wildly and/or groan horribly, but Samy is such an even-keeled and diplomatic guy that we kinda got robbed of an opportunity for vicarious unrealism pains here.
