"That's a pretty long password for someone who doesn't know the difference between a pdf and an executable" throwing some SHADE
@wewoor4 жыл бұрын
It's very true but presumably it also opened something that looked like a document with instructions on how to make a "safer" password, which incidentally would help the hacker once that pattern shows up in the log. (my amateur take on it, your comment was the only one i saw about that clip)
@misschief42834 жыл бұрын
It could have been a PDF file with an embedded executable, since it is possible to embed an executable in a PDF file and launch it (it was done in 2010 without exploiting any vulnerabilities, with JS disabled), these days it mostly depends on the reader used to open the PDF but certainly PDF readers present other vulnerabilities, ebooks also present similar problems (for the same reason).
@charlesmasclef13094 жыл бұрын
Miss Chief It’s easily debunkable as you can see the file types under a Details listview on windows folders. Even if you spoof the file extension by changing the binary hexadecimals using slack space methods. It’s also common sense... If your company has been hacked and it’s the panic in the inside because there are hackers who took employees identities, any brain with a IQ of +10 should be suspicious when receiving that kind of emails.

Actually, messing up with traffic lights is likely not very realistic. I remember seeing a picture of a traffic lights controller and there was an absurd amount of hardware for just a few lights. Some of that hardware was for remote access, fair enough. But it turns out that, due to the danger of those lights misbehaving, there's like a second computer which checks the main one is operating correctly, ie. making sure that there is no green light on both ways, minimum times are met, etc. So, even if someone were to take control of the main computer, I doubt they would be able to cause any accident. I don't have a direct experience with this kind of system, but having redundancy and cross-checking computers is common practice in critical systems.

I never liked the visuals (I was a script kiddie) when I was younger, but found out years later when it was finally released on DVD, that the visuals were meant to show how a hacker can easily visualise everything. In particular, the final hack scene with the building style representing file servers, is basically they can just walk through like a library and find/take what they want easily. I think it was a nice touch on the BS required for hollywood, but true to the nature.

The only thing I'd split hairs over was the Tron:Legacy bit, but that's more or less an argument over whether exploiting a physical system counts as social engineering. It's definitely part of hacking, otherwise DEF CON wouldn't do lockpicking contests. I'd put that on the editor though, seeing as including something like that would be like me trying to explain why network engineers will argue over what layers are actually responsible for the issues they resolve on the job.

Hackers is one of my all-time favorite movies. However, when combined with the fact that I wasn't feeling well at the time, the simultaneous and overlapping of accuracy and inaccuracy once gave me a nosebleed. Seriously. The accurate hacking is represented by some of the wildest and most potentially misleading visuals I have ever seen. Spending a couple hours rummaging through databases for a file is shown by flying through a virtual city. Sure, the cool factor is off the charts, and it well represents the thrill, but it just perpetuates the "computers are magic" attitude Hollywood is only now just kinda sorta getting over. And that goes for most of the scenes of actual hacking.
