I wish people would realize that ethical hacking is akin to the fire drills we did as children in school. Another way to see it is the drills law enforcement does to be prepared for scenarios in the real world. Just because some people learn and have the ability to do malicious things doesn’t mean they use it for malicious reasons. Thanks for these videos David we need the word to be spread that not all hackers are criminal.

On the hacking becoming mainstream and general audience topic. I completely agree with you both, if 25% (huge over shot, no way the percentage is actually this large) viewers WOULD use content like yours maliciously, then about half of that 25% would be gaining new knowledge. This information is already readily available for anyone that wants it and has the proper knowledge to implement any of it. For the rest of us, we are here mostly to stay aware and decently secure.
@thomasgurchiek33012 жыл бұрын
Dont underestimate legacy programming...there are way too many organizations that run the line of EOL/EOS on both hardware and software. One of the biggest examples of this in particular is Healthcare. In 2018 I had a client still running a financial database from 1988. Remember upgrades and extensions of BOTH software and hardware come from budgets, sometimes department budgets and not from the IT side. At the enterprise level majority of vendors will not support client software if it is EOS or sometimes even if the hardware does not meet system requirements aka outdated hardware. The end result is that both need to be updated. That not only is a major hit for expenses but is also a deciding factor to push it further down the todo list. This leaves the door wide open for opportunities.

Wonderful guest, David! Marcus’s philosophy on learning and his world view are interesting. Srinivasa Ramanujan did not have a Mathematics degree. Still he is a Mathematical genius. A person does not have to get a degree to have useful ideas of innovation and problem solving. I particularly like Marcus’s statement: “The rising tide lifts all boats”. This is a profound statement that is a signature of a genius.

The short documentary on him is good. The registered domain for wannacry took it down. People wanted to bury him over his past but he clearly wasn't doing anything or being malicious. To me, he's a hero.

Well he didn’t know that registering the domain would stop wannacry. It could have just as easily bricked every infected computer

@@Lucy-dk5cz right? It was the Bob Ross mantra of "happy little accidents." There have been on-going efforts to DDOS the domain to unleash wannacry back into the world. It baffles me that someone or anyone at all would want to do that. Equally baffling is that those who clearly are talented that create such destructive payloads don't use those skills for the greater good of humanity. Though, I suspect that some do during the day but then moonlight as a vigilante hacker.

I think the best way to learn indeed is to walk the path. Then you’ll come to know the path. My only concern is when someone is doing it without understanding. (I call it ‘fake it till you make it’ approach.) I’ve seen it sometimes and it can be very dangerous. If the person at that point forgets to carry on learning. When I do something new I try to measure up how good it is, how can I possibly break it or improve it. In other words, it’s important not to get overly confident in the knowledge. At least, in my experience.
