It's kinda funny... back then most computers had a CLI interface so the Hollywood hackers use fancy colorful GUIs many people weren't used to make it look extra complex. These days nearly all computers use colorful GUIs, so the Hollywood hackers use bi-color CLIs many people aren't used to make it look all technical and complex.

Anyone else notice that the TV interview with Agent Richard Gill at Lord Nikon's house is the same one he does when he busts Joey, but they show it BEFORE they actually bust him. You even see Joey being brought down the steps in the background.

The movie Hackers isn't how hacking really works. It's how a generation of upcoming nerds really wished it worked! It's how the hackers see themselves: Ultra-cool freedom fighters, challenging each other with their skills and intellect. They face each other with bravado and swagger as they vie for status, but when the real villains need fighting the superheroes of technology will unite and use their powers for good. Technical accuracy isn't important: The film captures the aspirational fantasy of hacker culture. The film treats hacking like a martial arts film treats kung-fu. Here we see two practitioners meet for the first time, knowing nothing of each other. An implicit challenge is made by their meeting: Each knows they must earn the respect of the other, so they engage in a friendly spar. A short fight ensures, some furniture is broken. It ends with Acid Burn victorious, but Crash fought well too. Each has learned that the other is no idle braggart, but a fighter worthy of recognition.
