Hacking San Francisco's Smart Parking Meter (2009)

Demonstration of compromising the MacKay Guardian XLE smart parking meter implemented in San Francisco (SFMTA) circa 2009.
We used a Microchip PIC-based smartcard with custom code to emulate the legitimate communication and send modified data to obtain the maximum allowable card value.

I find the manipulating of electrical componements aspect of hacking and glitching so interesting yet i find it so hard to actually find basic knowledge about this subject to get started. I would really love to spend some time learning and reading about the basic aspects of making use of the tiny faults that can be found in electrical circuts and putting those to my advantage.

@@J_A-_ Honestly, In order to exploit something you need to understand how that thing works as fundamentally and as intimately as possible, so just learn anything and everything you can about electronics/software, and then move your way into manipulation/exploitation. It's like trying to tune/upgrade a car without understanding how an engine works, where do you even start? You have to understand how it works in order to then go and change it.

I’m no expert, but I would assume it’s mostly a self guided process. Essentially it is up to you to learn the fundamentals of how these individual systems work and how they can be exploited. Embedded systems and software should be a good starting point.

Electronics engineering or electrical engineering both will help you achieve what you want. I have a degree and am a electronic technician and to some point you can do these type of things once you gain certain knowledge and it's trial and error when doing this stuff and if it's illegal you can get in serious trouble, buuut is a lot of fun when you do something cool
