Doss actually saved well over 100 men. But when questioned he was modest and said it must have been only around 40. Although multiple witnesses had the number closer to 125. The army settled for splitting the difference at 75. Mel Gibson and the producers agreed to leave out much of what he actually did for fear people wouldn’t believe the movie. By this battle, Desmond was already a decorated soldier, having won a bronze star and Purple Heart medals.

His actual achievements are so amazing that they toned them down. He suffered the rest of his life with PTSD and physical ailments from the war, as did countless other veterans.

Historical Fact: When asked how many lives he saved, Desmond T. Doss said approximately fifty. However, witnesses said it was closer to one hundred. A mutual agreement was reached at approximately seventy-five. PFC Doss was not wounded and evacuated in a daylight assault at Hacksaw Ridge. He was wounded a couple of weeks later in the Okinawa campaign during a night attack near Shuri. As per his Medal of Honor citation (noted above), he was wounded in the legs by a grenade, but had to wait five hours before stretcher bearers could reach him, during which time he dressed his own wounds. While being carried back to safety by three stretcher bearers, they were attacked by a Japanese tank. Doss crawled off the stretcher to a more seriously wounded man and insisted the others evacuate that soldier and then return for him. While waiting for the stretcher to return, he was shot by a sniper as he was being carried by another soldier. This caused a compound fracture of his arm, for which he improvised a splint using a rifle stock. He then crawled three hundred yards to an aid station for treatment.

There a video interview with a Japanese sniper that said he had Desmond in his sites either two or three times. Every time his gun jammed. It never jammed before or after. He was also a vegetarian and couldn't east most of the food he was given so he was constantly hungry.

Desmond Doss had the protection of angels 😇 A Japanese Sniper who survived the battle of Okinawa testified he remembered seeing doss carrying wounded men with no rifle , but everytime he tried to shoot him his rifle would mysteriously jam which is rare as it was a reliable bolt action rifle. A Japanise soldier after the war go meet him. He told him, that he (Doss) was in his scope 3 times and eveery time he wnated to shoot, the gun jammed. Gibson himself said that they have to hold themself back, bc a lot of things are not in this movie bc people will never belive it is true. Like Doss got 17 shrapnel to his leg and 5 hours later the surgery, he was going back...

There's a few side note that wasn't shown or mentioned in the movie. Well some I can remember reading about. 1: they actually estimated that Doss saved around 100 men on Hacksaw Ridge but Doss said it was around 50. So they compromised and said he saved 75 men. He did this all while being up there for about 12 hours. 2: while in training people would be complaining about he had it easy for not carrying a weapon or ammo but in reality he was carrying all the normal military gear (minus weapon an ammo) plus all his medical supplies and extra canteens of water. Which actually weighed more. 3: due to him being a Seventh Day Adventists his Sabbath was on a Saturday. So people would say he's slacking off but because everyone else was off on Fridays he was doing double duties and cleaning by himself. Also because of not eating meat from being a vegetarian it was harder for him to get a proper meal. Mainly when he was deployed. 4: when he was being carried out on the gurney he saw a wounded man and told them to put him down and use the gurney for the other man. Despite his injuries while waiting for them to come back with another gurney Doss crawled around on the ground giving aid to people near him. 5: about 5 years after the war Doss was admitted to a military hospital for PTSD for having reoccurring nightmare from the battle.

Great reaction! IN an interview Mel Gibson said that he didn't show everything that Desmond Doss did during that campaign because people would think the film was exaggerating Desmond's actions. Desmond's actual story is even more heroic.

Doss was a part of the 77th Infantry Division. By the time of this battle, they had already become extremely effective veterans and Doss looks like a younger and later recruit for the division. It began as an experimental unit to see how older people handled sudden immersion into the military. They were subject to lots of experiments and generally passed with flying colors before they were allowed to actually go into combat. In combat, they behaved with restraint and wisdom in the face of chaos and were generally successful at whatever they were assigned. The 77th was disbanded right after the war and continued existence as a brigade rather than a division. I think they're still around.

Interesting and sad note about PTSD in the 1910s when the father was traumatized-not only was there no proper treatment for it, but it was sometimes CRIMINALIZED. It was called “shell shock” at the time, and soldiers who “froze” were court martialed for cowardice and ones who “fled” were court martialed for desertion. They would have had training before but NOTHING could have prepared them for the horrors that were WWI. Trench life was a cold, muddy, rat infested hell… they emerged from those trenches to meet artillery fire (air warfare was brand new too)…. But as the first body part to be exposed was the face, they had an unprecedented number of catastrophic facial injuries. (More fun fact: the father of modern plastic surgery was a surgeon from New Zealand, who pioneered techniques to rebuild these men’s faces) You can’t blame the dad for being triggered

It took nearly 9hours to find his bible and his brothers in arms would not rest till they found it another two companies joined in the search because of what he did. Desmondas u saw was a vegetarian but due to military foods he was surviving on crackers and water while on the ridge so he was v weak but his faith got him through it. One of the Japanese soldiers he saved said I tried 19 times to shoot him and each time his gun jammed even when he tried allied weapons, non of them would work. They left out alot of his story as it is even more unbelievable like what I said above. He was awarded the bronze star for lives he saved in two previous battles in the Pacific. His father was also awarded the bronze star for lives he saved in WW1.

Movies by Mel Gibson usually based on true events or true stories. Passion of the Christ, Braveheart, The Patriot, Once we were Soldiers,this, but not Blackhawk Down, tho some thought so. His movies are beautiful and horrifying at the same time. Doss dad served at Belleau Wood, a terrible battle in ww1. Doss saved many more, and actually put in for another CMH! Every time he prayed for a unit, they were successful. Ine time he forgot to pray and that unit got chewed up! Also look up here in KZbin, type in Roy Benevides the Lazarus Soldier. Maybe the greatest soldier of all time! I met him once when I was stationed at Bragg!! The guy Doss saved with the blown up legs lived a long and healthy life!!

The old lady that lives across the street from me is was some relation to Doss's wife. She grew up around here and the two of them had a small farm about 10 or 15 miles from here. When the movie came out they had a special showing where people over a certain age got in for a discount. That is when we went and turns out there were alot of people that had known him personally and even some relatives. We offered to take our neighbor but she refused to go, she was afraid it might glorify. It was quite a showing, full grown men were crying like babies. You know he was actually already a hero before they even got there.

Hi girls, love your channel, than you for doing this reaction, I served as a medic in the army late 80s and early 90s, desmond acyually did alot more than what is in this video during the war, they trimmed it back, because they thought if they put his full heroic story in, it would not be belived by the people watching, he saved and did alot more, there are videos, about his life if you want to look it up for your own knowledge

A man beaten, shunned, and forced to leave the military, but in the battle he was a hero of men. The last man that came down with Doss was his friend. He made sure his body went back to the States. He lowered at total of 75 men. Remember that Jesus did the same for another blind man.

9/10 At The Very Center Of It All We knew already that Mel Gibson is a filmmaker with a powerful vision and the craftsmanship to go with it. Extraordinary battle scenes. Violence, Gibson style, which means Peckinpah plus, because here there is such a personal intention that makes every frame, utterly compelling. The only drawback and I have to say it, Vince Vaughn. Why? In the moment he appears, this extraordinary film becomes a movie. It took me completely out of it. When you look at him you see an actor, acting. On the other hand, Andrew Garfield. Sublime. He makes totally believable a character that could be fictional. The humanity in Andrew Garfield's eyes makes everything real. It tells us, in no uncertain terms, that at the very center of it all, there is love. Love!

To be fair, potentially, to Smitty's mom If Smitty was in his early twenties in 1945 (they never actually give his age but he looks to be early 20s ish) It's not unlikely that his mom gave him up when he was five because of the depression and an inability to successfully care for him herself. Many children at that time were given up to orphanages not because their parents didn't want to keep them but because they couldn't feed or house them, and their best chance at continued life was to go to an orphanage or church/state care program of some sort. That may not have been the situation at all, but who knows. From the mindset of a 5-year-old, he wouldn't have been able to understand what was happening, why it was happening, or have the ability to process for future memory The clues that would help tell him such. As someone who was in foster care between two and a half and four, adopted at 4, with literally no memory prior to foster care, I'm more than some understand how that can happen. My parents did not want to give me up. My twin and I were taken by the state. But, we never knew that until we were able to finally meet our birth parents in our twenties, long after the trauma of it affected or developmental years. My brother is a POS, and while I have improved greatly I still to this day suffer from side effects from that early trauma. It's a shame they didn't understand PTSD back then, or that CPTSD didn't become more of an understood thing until far far far more recently.

In response to Captain Glover telling Desmond that wars aren't won by "giving up your life", Jesus won the war for the eternal souls of everyone by laying down HIS life. "Greater love has no man, than to lay his life down for his friends." John 15:13 I love this movie so much, thank you for reacting!!
