Since there is a new Mighty Ducks show on Disney plus, Tony and Newt got together and rewatched the original Mighty Ducks from 1992. In this Podcast / Movie Review they will talk about all the things that make this top shelf! Like the memorable characters, Emilio Esteves' one liners, and the impact it had on actual Hockey.
After reckless young lawyer Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez) gets arrested for drunk driving, he must coach a kids hockey team for his community service. Gordon has experience on the ice, but isn't eager to return to hockey, a point hit home by his tense dealings with his own former coach, Jack Reilly (Lane Smith). The reluctant Gordon eventually grows to appreciate his team, which includes promising young Charlie Conway (Joshua Jackson), and leads them to take on Reilly's tough players.

I’m from Edina, Minnesota. “Cake Eater” is a reference to kids being from the rich areas on the suburbs. Kids from Edina, which is where Adam Banks is from, are known as “Cake Eaters”. This term was invented from my Dad’s generation. I’m 36 now and my Dad is late 60s. He too graduated from Edina and was known as a Cake Eater.

Hockey is expensive. The films got me into the sport so much, that I asked my mom if I could join when I was 7. She told me we didnt have enough. Didnt stop me from roller blading and playing it with my cousin. Awesome episode guys.

I live in the Midwest and we use Cake-Eater to describe "The Rich Kids". We had a local High School football team that was in a nice area, had an expensive summer program, an expensive weight room and field. Therefore we'd refer to them as the Cake-Eaters.

As a MN native I can confirm that Cake Eater is an insult we use! Basically its a slang/insult term to describe people from the suburb of Edina, which is one of the richest suburbs in the Twin Cities and is known for having 'real "stuck up" citizens. While I dont think its used as often as it use to be, the same sentiment that many have towards Edina still exists.

Dude shoved his hand in the laceraction, located the jugular, and pinched that sumbitch all the way to the hospital. FYI: Although Mighty Ducks 2 & 3 do utilize the Mall of America as a filming location, the first Mighty Ducks does not, as the MOA did not open to the public for four months after the Mighty Ducks completed filming. The mall scene took place at Gaviidae Commons in Nicollet Mall in downtown Mpls.

Also FYI, I lived like a block away from one of the ice arenas they used as a filming location. I could've tried out to be an extra as a spectator. They had the line to be an extra outside the local Kmart. Some high school classmates of mine can be seen in crowd reactions for a split second or two. I remember pausing the VHS tape when it first came out to try to spot familiar faces. That's three times in my life now where I passed on trying to be an extra (the other two being Public Enemies and Transformers: Dark of the Moon). By most accounts, Mighty Ducks was the most memorable of the bunch. Also, rumor has it that neighbors spotted Paula Abdul doing her morning jog down our street (her and Emilio were in a relationship at that time). Paula Abdul was still very popular at that time, coming off a triple platinum album (looks as if some of it was recorded at Paisley Park). This may all seem insignificant for those who live near the entertainment industry and/or popular filming locations, but this was abnormal for the relatively quiet Minneapolis suburb I once lived in, so I can still recall the brief but punctuated excitement it caused.

Elden Henson is a super underrated actor. Loved him as foggy loved him in mighty Ducks great in the butter fly effect. but another overlooked film made me fucking cry a lot as a kid in the 90's was The mighty, overlooked film yea its not Hack the Movies material but it really is a great touching film with talented actors. Also stars Kieran Culkin, Honestly would put it above movies like my girl or born on the 4th of july, The Mighty ducks 2 , the butterfly effect. Like that movie is a great drama worth a watch.

I have 3 varsity sports letters, and wasn't ever particularly good at the sports. One in cross country running, one in track and field, and one for managing basketball. I only ever scored 1 point in a track meet (3rd place in a medium-distance hurdle event) and wasn't in the top 7 runners in cross country, who are usually the ones that count as varsity. Sort of the equivalent of the participation awards you mentioned. It was never said, but my 4.0 GPA probably helped the team average.
