Hey, since I got yet another comment on it but pinning comments is a thing now, I thought I'd address it once and for all rather than continue to reply to each comment individually; Yes, Rhea is Hades' mother not Gaia, who's his grandmother. I misspoke during the video and have clearly learned an important lesson about being distracted by food. Glad to see so many people on top of their mythical genealogy though! Kudos!

Yeah that was the version Rick Riodan used in Percy Jackson's Greek Gods. Zeus also said that it was okay because he is Persephone's father and he was sort of giving her away

Ayanyaj Sivart yeah though I'm sure I also found a version of that ilk elsewhere as well since I never read past the first book of Percy Jackson and only vaguely remember it. I read a lot of books of mythology (both collects of myths as well as people anylizing their structure and meaning) I could have picked up that version just about anywhere I suppose it's hard to recall. None the less I think it makes a lot of sense. In most stories Hades tends not to trike me as the kidnapping type and even when he did take Persphone he didn't just immediately try to have his way with her as Zues probably would have done but instead tried to win her over with riches.

Funny thing is, in the original version, she wanders down, likes it, and stays there, even though Hades is confused why, then when her mother freaks out, she eats the fruit so she doesn't have to go back. Basically, she was forced to leave the underworld, which she felt at home with, because her mom forced her to remain single and alone, go figure.

By how much does this version pre-date the popular version? I really prefer this version you described to the well known version. I just want confermation that this is the Origin of the myth.

@@amyliaclenny1866 It dates back to the ancient days of the 1970's when an author wrote it so she could have a version she could tell her daughter. To make it clear, the oldest known version of the myth is the kidnapping one, if an older non-kidnapping version exists, it didn't survive to modern times.

Variations: Persephone was picking flowers with Hecate and some Nymphs. They were having a picnic of sorts. The nymphs were afraid to tell Demeter they'd let Hades kidnap her daughter, so Demeter punished them for withholding information. They're birds now. In the cosmology, the Underworld is as far below the surface as the sky is far above. (so about 50 miles.) Some vehicle is advised. Iambe was the old woman who tried to cheer Demeter up with dirty jokes. It didn't work, so she hid her face with her skirt in embarrassment. She wasn't wearing underwear, and Demeter laughed at that. There's a version where Hades says "You can't eat this food," but when Zeus summons her, she eats a few seeds in nervousness. (She's a stress eater.) My favourite version has Persephone choose to eat the seeds, 'cause she's fallen for Hades. Greece has three seasons: The wet season in winter, the growing season, and summer is hot and dry. Originally it was during that drought season that Demeter was mourning, not when everyone else is having a snowy winter.

@LittleMissRequiem5 жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree. Not only is that the most palatable version from a moral/feminist standpoint, but if you look at the other myths involving the couple and the available evidence on each of them, there are several scenes and other details that simply wouldn’t make sense if their entire relationship had been based solely on kidnapping and deceit. There are quite a few examples of this that I could cite, but one of the clearest examples would be the story of Minthe: a nymph who once tried to seduce Hades (or in some versions was his ex-girlfriend prior to his marriage to Persephone) with varying degrees of success depending on the version, although by all accounts Hades’ interest in Minthe ranged from minimal to 100% nonexistent. In any event, Persephone wasted zero time putting a stop to Minthe’s efforts and turned her into a mint plant, which in turn highlights a few discrepancies between Persephone’s portrayal in her marriage story and her portrayal in the story of Minthe: *1)* If Persephone had been kidnapped and forced into marriage against her will to someone she didn’t really love, one would think that she would see Minthe’s advances as a relief and let Minthe do her thing, if not outright encourage Minthe’s advances. Persephone taking action against Minthe to such a strong degree, especially since by all accounts Minthe had no substantial success in seducing Hades anyway, shows that at some point Persephone had grown to want/love Hades just as much as he wanted/loved her (if not potentially more so). *2)* Notice how there is never any mention of Hades’ reaction to what Persephone did to Minthe. He is never mentioned as being angry at Persephone in any way, nor does he make any attempt to save Minthe or (if Minthe went far enough to become pregnant) to save any potential unborn children. This is a stark contrast to how the Olympian 12 (especially Zeus, e.g. the story of Dionysus and Semele) would generally react in the same situation, indicating that Hades had no real objection to Persephone punishing Minthe for trying to seduce him, which is not at all consistent with the stereotypical image of a kidnapper who forced Persephone into marriage (and as such would presumably have felt entitled to take on Minthe as a mistress if he really wanted to whether Persephone liked it or not).

To keep on Demeter's good side. I had cereal for breakfast. Couple of points about the myth. Hades is just following his big brother's example. You don't use a pick up line, you pick the girl up. And he probably heard chicks dig the ride so put some spinning rims on the chariot. Also Zeus wouldn't intervene because it'd violate his 'bros before hos' rule. If he starts ratting out his homies then everyone will feel at liberty to tell Hera or the searching family members (but especially Hera) where he is and who he's with. This view of the myth brought to you by Barney Stimson.
@ZetatheSixth7 жыл бұрын
No. Hades did not kidnap Phersephone. She was feeling pressured by her over-bearing mother, Hades saw this and then asked for Zeus' permission to marry her. Zeus' knew Dimeter would never agree so he advised his brother to just come by pick her up like a leather jacket boyfriend in an 80s movie. They loved each other. And the only reason Zeus forced Hades to let his wife to go was to keep the crops from dying, and to stop Dimeter from bitching in his ear. Phersephone begged to stay with her love but Hades knew Zeus and Dimeter would never allow it so Hades told her about the seeds and even gave her a chance to refuse because he only wanted her to be happy. But Phersephone, refused and ate the seeds as fast as she could so she would see her love again or die and be his for all eternity.

I ate chocolate chip waffles at midnight, because breakfast/Dael. The version I heard had Zeus make a deal with Hades to help him capture Persephone by covering the entire world in a cloud while Hades goddessnapped her so no one would know who did it. When Demeter asked Helios what happened he said that he didn't see, and that it was weird that he didn't see because he always sees whats going on unless Zeus blocks his vision with a cloud, and it is at this point Demeter makes the connection and threatens to use an implement of harvest in the same fashion Chronos had on Uranus if Zeus didn't spill the beans.

Maybe that is because he was also one of the less favoured, which meant there were far less stories about him. He turns up in other stories, like Herakles, Theseus losing his ass, Orpheus - but only because they go to the Underworld. Hades seems to be a very orderly character - he's too busy running the Underworld to go out doing much of the crap the others do - this whole story of Persephone is the one time he did do such a thing.

I watched at a wendys while eating lunch, (got a really unhealthy bacon burger that I am regretting now) But yes, there should be more Breakfast with Dael videos in the future!
