The part that really puts all the music in Hades a giant step up, is how they handle the transitions. Every track has that first, softer version, and then that heavy version. When you're just walking around, reading dialogue, etc, it's the softer track. Then when combat starts, the music seamlessly transitions into the heavy version of the track. This one in particular is the music for the first boss fight. So it starts out with you trying to talk your way out of the fight, and then when it comes down to fighting time, the music you've been listening to just says "want to hear this music... turned up to 11?".
@Rhaethyn3 жыл бұрын
And in that same vein, God of the Dead, the final boss music, has a phase 2 that turns it up to 11 as well - but then they added a phase 3 superboss and though "Idk, 12 I guess?" - that being The Unseen Ones

Darren Korb likes to make mashed-up genre names for each of the games he's worked on: Bastion as "Acoustic Frontier Trip-hop" Transistor as "Electronic Old-World Post-Rock" He's described Pyre as Bardic Acoustic Rock And Hades as "Mediterranean-Prog Rock-Halloween" As such I'd like to recommend Paper Boats from Transistor for a look at his work from a different genre!

@andreww75643 жыл бұрын
For some context of the track, the game switches which section its in dynamically based on the intensity of your play. If you're just exploring or fighting in low difficulty encounters you'll get the calmer more ambient sections, another one for a regular combat, and a different one for mini-bosses and bosses. A lot of the songs on the hades soundtrack do that or are dynamic in some other way. If you ever listen to "The God of Dead" on this channel, which is the precursor to The Unseen Ones, you'll notice that there are different 'sections' of intensity that in-game correspond to different phases of the fight. ("The God of Dead" is in itself a more intense version of the main title theme "No Escape"). Highly encourage watching a hades clear to get a feel for how the music matches up with the gameplay. In particular, the odd jolting rhythmic patterns in "The God of Dead" fit very nicely with the actual rhythym of the gameplay during that fight.

Possibly the best metal album ever made for a game in our era.

The people behind Hades, Supergiant, are abdolute masters at what they do. Bastion, Transistor, Pyre, and now Hades. Every single one os unique with distinct musical styles ranging from operatic electronic, to splitting lyrical versions of bluegrass tracks then bringing them together for a final song, to the blend of metal in Hades. Beautiful art, stories, characters, acting, and gameplay styles. I genuinely don't believe they've made a bad game. All while ensuring their employees never experience crunch and get substantial time off. Seriously, some talented stuff at Supergiant.
@AuspexAO3 жыл бұрын
Pyre is especially amazing, because they recorded like 14 different versions of the final match track featuring leitmotifs from the other teams. They put so much thought and love into the lore of the world that it's very easy to forget that it's not some real mythology in the way Hades is.

I'm not sure if anybody has mentioned it in comments already, but one of the best things (besides, yknow, everything else) that Darren Korb, Ashley Barrett, and Supergiant do with the music in their games is that most songs either have multiple versions (such as Red humming in Transistor) or gradual changes as the song progresses (like in this track), so that the music can vary in intensity with what the player is doing in game. In Hades, the music varies in intensity depending on how many enemies, what phase of a fight, or the scale of the enemy you are up against, and this lends to an incredible player experience where you are rewarded for content progression just through the music you get to hear PLUS any loot or story beats. I think one of the only tracks from the game that beat Scourge of the Furies for me would be God of the Dead... though, if you are planning on playing the game, I may recommend experiencing the song through the game itself rather than listening to it on its own. There's just something about how the music lands WITH the combat in the game and that intensity variation I mentioned earlier that can't be experienced by listening alone (even though I listen to it on repeat afterwards lol)
@poskeegget80432 жыл бұрын
When playing the game, you don't really get the time to appreciate the OST as much as when you just sit down and listen to it like this. It really is a great piece of music. Fitting to follow one of the best characters in the game.

One suggestion I'd like to make is literally anything from the soundtrack of the original Nier, which was the precursor to the much more well known Nier: Automata. My personal favorites are "Song of the Ancients" (either the Devola or Popola version, though the duet version is amazing, and only available as the conclusion of a series of fetch quests across the game world.), "Shadowlord's Castle - Roar", or "Yonah" (again, any version). It was a game made by noted industry crazy-man Yoko Taro, and he not only got an entire philharmonic orchestra to play it, but had an entire fake language made up so the songs had lyrics. It's honestly an amazing experience.
