I just LOVE when Hades soundtrack turns heavy. It sounds so crisp and awesome.

I'm sure it's been mentioned before, but Darren Korb did an insane amount of technical work for Hades' soundtrack between fading the levels of intensity and dynamic measure choices for certain moments. There's a bass only version of every action song for when the battle is over and you're leisurely exploring a room, for example. And the endings of each boss fight are programmed to lead into the heavy finale of their respective songs, even if you end the fight at a weird part of the song. Darren Korb is simply a madman.

It is unreal how talented Derran Korb is. Not only has he consistently written and performed probably my favorite video game OST's but in Hades he also did an amazing job voicing the main character, recording over 8,000 lines of dialog for him alone (with additional lines for other characters).

I think the Theremin does a lot to make Hades stand out both from a point of atmosphere in the game and also for the Music itself

So the whole "Calm" vs "Combat" songs happens a LOT in video games, it's actually my fav kind of musical transition ever. Games that come to mind that do this besides Hades: FF XIII-2, Fire Emblem: Three Houses and FE: Awakening, there's a lot more but I can't think of any atm.

Hollow Knight does a lot with dynamic music. An area's music will fade into a more intense version for arena fights, and there's the Grimm theme which fades into full-on metal for brief periods during the fight.

I love the way Nier Automata and FF7R do dynamic music. Route 2 of Nier where you hack enemies and it seamlessly transitions to the 8bit version is chef's kiss.

Funny that you specifically mention Godsmack because I always thought this particular song reminded me of Prince of Persia: Warrior Within. Which, as it so happens, had a song by Godsmack featured very prominently in trailers and some gameplay sequences, and took heavy inspiration from their sound for the overall soundtrack.

This is related to Scourge of the Furies in that this is a boss theme. The names of these two songs is directly relevant to the boss fight itself. I don't believe the theme of the first boss fight follows this trend, but fight 2 (Scourge of the Furies), fight 3 (The King and The Bull), and fight 4 (not gonna name it here) all follow this theme. Also, each fight take place in a completely different area of the Greek afterlife, so they don't take place anywhere really near each other, so their relation is ONLY that they're boss themes.

He already reacted to The Unseen Ones, it was his first encounter with Hades music. Of course, that particular track has no chill.

The first boss theme is "The Painful Way," which does reference the dialogue between the first boss and Zagreus during their first in-game encounter, fyi, it just doesn't directly (or clearly) reference the underlying mythology. Hades is my favorite game OST from the past decade, bar none.

Godsmack is actually pretty known among action game players of 2000s because second game of Prince of Persia Sands of Time Trilogy - PoP: Warrior Within - featured songs "Straight out of line" (Credits song no less!) and especially "I stand alone" (instrumental version was used in every chase section where basically local variant of Death Reaper itself chases after Prince). And obviously because these two songs were so prominent and important for the game the whole music direction of that chapter in the Sands of Time Trilogy was based around them.

The reason this and Scourge of the Furies sound so similar is because they are 2 of 5 (technically 6 but the sixth is "secret" and way different sonically than the other 5) boss tracks in this game, and pretty much all of them are structurally similar for Reasons™️, except the very very last one doesn't have the calm opening (nor does it need it).

youtube rec'd scourge of the furies and i immediately had to scroll through your videos to see if one of your lovely viewers also recommended the king and the bull i'd recommend the entire soundtrack (same with hades 2), but if i had to pick one, other than the usual hades boss fight music lol, it'd be this one but also wanted to say, idk if all your videos are viewer suggestions or what, but goddang they've hit all my faves on here (like any/all of final fantasy, undertale, crypt of the necrodancer, etcetc)

I forget if this was pointed out in the Scourge of the Furies video, but though the CD version of the track you listened to organizes the track from calmer to punchier sections in a gradual progression, the songs are dynamically mixed in a very interesting way. The calm section plays when in combat with normal enemies and has two versions: the full mix of the section, and one lacking a lot of instruments (keeping mostly the rhythm section with maybe the theremin being retained). The heavy sections play for the miniboss fights and the boss fight. There are a veritable ton of ways in which the game will transition between the two when you enter the room containing the boss, depending on what section of the track you are in when your start the transition. There are many transitional phrases written for these pieces that segue between the sections As a Greek folk dancer, I love hearing the Greek instruments that Darren got for the OST, and I'm very curious how much he delved up into Greek folk music in researching for this soundtrack!

Man, I’ve been waiting to see you hear this one, glad to see you’re coming back down this rabbit hole! You should consider Rage of the Myrmidons for the next, it’s from the same stage of the game and brings the same heaviness but a different style thereof. And remember- There is no escape.

Hades is one of two VGM albums I've bought and listened to outside of the games, every song just fucks so hard. it's 30 tracks, most of them are the length of a Tool song, and every one grabs me every single time no matter how many times I've heard them and how many runs I've done in the game.

I'm a bit late to these due to a trip so I'll have some catching up here. I've listened to the Hades ost before this channel and it didn't completely blow me away but it's been a few years and I don't remember this song (because I listen to a lot of music like Jesse). I just noticed the acoustic guitar sounds like the one used for the Breaking Bad theme lol; this song has quite the vibe, like walking through an area. I like the ghostly instrument used in the high end, cool riffs all around. I think I just zoned out too much when I listened to the ost because this is better than I remember. The transition to the heavy more battle oriented version is dope and it's more more style for sure. I really need to give this ost another chance it seems pretty great, I liked this song. Great feel and vibe, I need to give Hades another chance for sure.

I just this second realized that the common videogame technique of using the same melodies but with different instrumentations, particularly to create a feeling movement and progression without actual melodic progression, is effectively one of the two things that makes Hans Zimmer so special. The other thing he's known for is using textures and sound effects in music, which is ANOTHER thing that's very common in videogames. Wild.
