@Mariana165624 жыл бұрын
@@heyitsnibbs9650 that’s true, the workers as a chorus is used to often represent the power of his music in the rest of the world. Nevertheless it would’ve been so cool if he had gotten a nomination, he really nailed the naivety and eventual realism of Orpheus.

The original concept album (the one with Bon Iver as Orpheus) version from like a decade ago is much more a tragic love story, and this version has aspects of both. It's a very interesting comparison if you're interested in seeing the evolution of the song. The versions with Anais Mitchell singing it alone (even before the album existed) are also really compelling.

I could write paragraphs about the entirety of Hadestown, but I think the thing that struck me the most in the heart is that Orpheus was about to go. Like, literally about to turn to go when the Worker's heard him. And they were moved by him when previously the Fates said they didn't care anymore. They were moved by his song, and Orpheus was in turned moved by their own harmonies. Critical strike on my heart achieved.

That's his gift - even when he has nothing more to believe he gives others something to believe in through his words and his voice. By listening to him they are stronger. He is a part muse - he's giving his gifts to the world as much as his mother and her sisters did.

I love this song because of hades' line near the end is that "cowards can be courageous when the band is playing loud" as it juxtaposes "doubt comes in" perfectly with this moment of weakness being with people around him making him able to fight, while he succumbs when alone. As someone who only listened to the live album, this song puts so many later lines in perspective.
@Mariana165624 жыл бұрын
You know, if you consider Orpheus as Anais Mitchell stand in, then this song really takes a whole new approach, like how she explores the themes of wanting to change the world through the power of art and feeling sometimes powerless after watching so many times the ending never change. How it seems that no matter what we do, greed will always win in the real world. But she manages to speak to us through that seemingly pessimistic view of life by saying “if it true what they say, I’ll be on my way, but who are they to say what the truth is anyway?”. And also through the play as a whole, she says that even if we can’t change the outcome, trying is always better than ignoring it.

God the workers’ part is so chilling and meaningful, I love hearing their working sounds quiet down and their voices build up as they react to Orpheus’ sorrow. It also has a lot of power when paired up with Hermes’ narration. I must say this song has improved so much as a rebellion song in comparison to the tragic love song in the original album.

Honestly a huge reason why the Orpheus and Eurydice drop was the one I was excited for the most was because majority of my favorite songs from the show are about them!!!! ESPECIALLY THIS ONE!!!! this one is so underrated but I love it sooooo much!!! Seeing Orpheus struggle even before Doubt Comes In is just really lovely because he loves Eurydice but he's also a realistic human being because he had a but of doubt from the middle which is really cool! One lyric change I'm definitely happy about, that they cut "take this voice" because now I don't have to worry about my screaming "NO!" if I see this live like I nearly did when listening to the 2017 cast (thankfully I was alone when that nearly happened). Half wondered if that's what the wind was supposed to feel like in the original story when he tried to jump off a cliff and the wind caught him and carried him gently down to the earth because it couldn't stand the idea of not being able to hear him sing.

This reminds me of detroit: become human, like from the perspective of the deviants. most were beaten by their owners, damaged, hurt, traumatized, and then demonized for thinking that's wrong and wanting something as simple as human rights, which is denied, just because they're not ' human. ' They made bleed a different color, but I feel they're human all the same. This song is the start of their revolution.

I like how this is more uplifting with the workers but honestly the solemnity of the last part was what got me really pumped for this.
