I love Hadestown, and while it's not my favorite song from the show (there are SO MANY amazing ones) and tbh I usually don't go for hetero love songs, I actually like All I've Ever Known. I like that Eurydice's hesitance isn't because of cliched shyness or modesty, but because it's a post-apocalypse, life is hard, trust & love are harder, she's used to being tough & independent. (btw SPOILERS ahead) And I like how the lyrics echo other parts of the show. When Orpheus says "who am I to hold you?" it kinda foreshadows the doubts he'll feel (via the Fates) in Wait for Me I & II ("who are you to think you can walk a road that no one's ever walked before?" / "who are you to think you can hold your head up higher than your fellow man?"). when both Orpheus & Eurydice say they've known each other forever even though they've just met, it reminds me how Orpheus was singing the story of Hades & Persephone falling in love before he actually knew that tale, and more generally of the show itself. This is not the first time Hermes has told their (Orpheus/Eurydice) story... it's an "old song," but maybe next time it'll turn out differently... And I even love the bittersweet tragedy of it. They make promises to each other in this song that were heartfelt but impossible. When they admit their flaws and broken promises to each other (in Promises) it's a moment of growth for both characters. Together, these songs set up a love that isn't perfect or even "happily ever after," but is so much more real and relatable for it... uh yeah. thanks for coming to my Ted Talk, lol! I literally can't stop thinking about Hadestown!

This is one of my favorite songs from Hadestown, and Reeve and Eva perform it fantastically well! I'm looking forward to seeing the show on Broadway when it opens! That said, I'm not a huge fan of Orpheus' new first line ("I don't know how or why; Who am I that I should get to hold you?" at 2:05-2:11), especially compared to the London line ("I've never walked alone; I've always had a crowd to gather 'round me"). I feel like the old lyrics really encapsulate the difference between Eurydice's and his backgrounds and helps to illuminate why they have such opposite attitudes in life. Changing it lessens the impact of the contrast there. I'm interested to see what other lyric changes have been made as well.

(SPOILERS ahead). In interviews I've heard Reeve Carney mention how they changed Orpheus's character since London, and that might have something to do with it. If I'm understanding the change correctly (no promises there), his London interpretation was this somewhat macho sorta rock (well, folk) star. His assertive/rallying lines in mid-Act II reflected that; his immediate proposal of marriage when he met Eurydice reflected that. I haven't seen the Broadway show, just the officially released songs on KZbin, but I get the impression this Orpheus starts off less confident & sure of himself. His love for Eurydice makes him grow into the type of person who could stir up a riot or talk back to the king of the underworld - he doesn't start out that way. (This miiiiight help the audience reflect, hey maybe I can take action & make change too - but anyway). On top of all that, I think just having "who am I / who are you" repeat throughout the show has a certain epic/mythic appeal.
