James is returning home from London on the train and shares a dining car table with Anne Hepton (Jane Merrow) and her eight year old daughter Charlotte. He thinks nothing of it at the time but a later meeting with Anne will have a strong impact on him.
Meanwhile Aunt Helen is concerned that local brewery owner Dakin is about to retire and sell his shares. She also owns quite a few shares in the company and is concerned that if he sells out to Mercantile Brewers they will shut the brewery down.
(Possible plot spoilers from here)
Having had a disagreeable run in with Merton, the Mercantile’s front man, James decides to organise a syndicate to buy out Dakin’s himself. With £10,000 (around £125,000 these days) still to find he approaches his accountant Taylor who has worked with Hadleigh on several projects previously. However Taylor has just merged his company and his new associate just happens to be Anne Hepton who makes it plain they will not be lending James the ten thousand.

My mum's in her 90's. Back in the 1970's, her posher friends all wore hair and clothes like this. Some of them still do😂😊

Ha, yes you're right. A sort of Maggie Thatcher "hair or hat?" look, permed and hairsprayed into submission, with the addition of a gentle tint. And oddly, at the time, many respectable gents chose to throw caution to the four winds and proudly sprouted mutton chop sideburns and let their hair dangle transgressively beneath the collar. Though Hadleigh would have probably drawn the line at the reckless folly of a droopy moustache. Otherwise, Maxwell would likely have raised a Jeevesian eyebrow of disapproval.

I love 💕 that the British call their moms, mums. And their wives or other women, they call old girls and men old boy. But now that I text thing about it, that’s just exactly what they are. That’s just what they are. They’re simply boys and girls as they grow older. Then they really are old boys 👨🏻‍🦳and old girls 👵🏻. 😊

@@winonamassingill7895 These little differences in American and English cultural expression add welcome flavour. I noticed recently though that more English are using "mom".

Indeed. Though there was a brief fashion amongst the leisured classes back in the early '70s for placing painted backdrops outside one's Georgian windows in order to simulate any desired season ;-)

From what I can make out, high class wheeling and dealing, helped by being bankrolled with his inheritance and Old Etonian network ;-) We live next door to someone very similar: a big land owner - we aren't by the way!
