Hadrian's Library was created by Roman Emperor Hadrian in AD 132 on the north side of the Acropolis of Athens.[1][2]
The building followed a typical Roman Forum architectural style, having only one entrance with a propylon of Corinthian order, a high surrounding wall with protruding niches (oikoi, exedrae) at its long sides, an inner courtyard surrounded by columns and a decorative oblong pool in the middle.[3] The library was on the eastern side where rolls of papyrus "books" were kept. Adjoining halls were used as reading rooms, and the corners served as lecture halls.
The library was seriously damaged by the Herulian invasion of 267 and repaired by the prefect Herculius in AD 407-412.[4] During Byzantine times, three churches were built at the site, the remains of which are preserved:
a tetraconch (5th century AD)
a three-aisled basilica (7th century), and
a simple cathedral (12th century), which was the first cathedral of the city, known as Megali Panagia.
Around the same period as the cathedral another church, Agios Asomatos sta Skalia, was built against the north facade, but it is not preserved.

Thank you for the video. It looks like repairs to the Library are following the model of the Acropolis--that of piecing together the fragments on site to show how the building may once have looked, at least in outline.

When you talk us thru what you see, where the buildings used to be and also speculate it adds so much value to the video, thanks for doing that. It is like we are right beside you and we are partners in exploration! :-)

I really wish they had a model of the site... I think ALL ruins that are not 50% intact or more should have some type of representation of how they USED to look. That way we get a feeling for what we are seeing and experiencing. =) Just me. I am pretty visually oriented... Thanks for watching. Eric

No not really. I think it gets cool but not so much you need a coat. I have been out walking in shorts and a T-shirt without an issue. The days are hot and sticky. But I am from Arizona, which is a dry heat. Thanks for watching my videos. :) Eric

but you re explaining it totally wrong!!! the library IS the outside part, what you are mistakingly calling an enclosure, THAT is the library, the thing in the centre is a much much later church built in the former courtyard of hadrians library, right where the pond used to be....granted it is NOT a clear signage, but if you give yourself more time to read the text, youll see it says that the church is 5th century !!!!! Also, you read the signs wrong , what you are showing at 11:15 is the room that held the books (the one you were facing at 09:02). And the biggest mistake is your conclusion in the end, saying that is was not one thing, but it was also churches, houses, shops.....totally wrong! the library WAS one thing, it was only a library. No churches existed when it was built by Hadrian because there was no christian religion yet. Also no houses OR shops whatsoever in there. What confused you is the fact that the place was used throughout time, so 3 centuries after Hadrian, the central church was built, and many many centuries later the last church you saw was built (asomatoi).....you dont need to know all these things beforehand if you dont have the time to study, i get it, its your holidays, but if you re going to make a video, take 15 mins to first read the signage without recording so that you understand it first, and THEN make your video....anyone can spot these mistakes you made by simply pausing the video and reading the signage carefully...please correct it
