The sound that birthed countless emulations and simulations. This is the legendary 1962 Fender Jazz Bass modified fretless (aka the Bass of Doom) being played so beautifully by the great Hadrien Feraud. Respect and RIP to this magnificent instrument's original owner and electric bassist par excellence, John Francis (Jaco) Pastorius III (December 1, 1951 - September 21, 1987). Wow.
@aaronperelmuter8433 Жыл бұрын
No it isn’t!! This is a new bass from the Fender Custom Shop!! Jaco’s BoD NEVER had a flame maple top on it. This one doesn’t sound the same as the original either, different strings, different lacquer coating on the fingerboard and different wood for the body. Not to mention the pickups and electronics are VERY different from the one and only BoD, which has sadly been lost to time after it was stolen. 😱🤯
@windogendoors75665 ай бұрын
@@aaronperelmuter8433Incorrect. The reason this bass looks different is because it was restored by Kevin Kaufman after Jaco himself requested it. Jaco broke the bass into many pieces and thus Kaufman repaired it. Yes different wood had to be used to fill in the gaps but even after this, Jaco was pleased with it. There is a picture of Jaco with this bass after the work was different. Same top and all. I can't speak if the strings or electronics changed but this is the Bass of Doom.
@Peter-ff1tp5 ай бұрын
@@aaronperelmuter8433 Haha. The certainty with which you spout total lies is hilarious. This IS Jaco’s bass. THE one. The Bass of Doom. There are pictures of Jaco, this bass in its current condition, and the luthier who rebuilt it for him(who was Jaco’s bass tech). It needed rebuilding because Jaco had thrown it down a concrete flight of stairs and smashed it to pieces, and it wasn’t stolen until after it was repaired. Metallica’s Robert Trujillo was the official custodian of the instrument last I checked, but it may have moved on to live with Felix Pastorious by now. All this and more information is easily accessible and verifiable. Don’t talk about things you don’t know!

The BOD sounds the same as it did 45 years ago, despite being smashed up, rebuilt and being played by Hadrien instead of Jaco! I can still hear that tone from A Remark You Made and Continuum right there.
@aaronperelmuter8433 Жыл бұрын
WTF? It isn’t the same ACTUAL instrument mate! The original BoD is long gone and lost. Moreover, Jaco’s bass NEVER had a flame-maple top. Also, really not sure what you’re listening to but the bass Hadrien is playing sounds VERY different from the BoD. The huge mwah and the really growling aspects simply aren’t present to the same extent as with the original BoD. Maybe listen again, wearing headphones or something as it’s really quite an obvious difference, especially if you’re a fretless or upright bass player. 😱🤯
@DaddyStoat Жыл бұрын
@@aaronperelmuter8433 Actually, it is - when the bass was found, the body was smashed into several pieces. It was glued back together and the flame maple top was added to hide the cracks. It’s all in Bill Milkowski’s book, plus Robert Trujillo wouldn’t have paid a million dollars for it if it didn’t have the correct provenance. And, if course it’s not going to sound identical in this clip. Hadrien is playing it, not Jaco, and it’s not going through a big Acoustic 370, but you can definitely hear that signature tone. Incidentally, I am a fretless player. :) [edit] This is what happened: “In 1986, the bass was repaired by luthiers Kevin Kaufman and Jim Hamilton, after it had been broken into many pieces. After the repair Pastorius recorded a session with Mike Stern, then the bass was stolen from a park bench in Manhattan in 1986. It was found in a guitar shop in 2006, but the shop owner refused to give it up. The Pastorius family enlisted lawyers to help but nearly went bankrupt in 2010. Robert Trujillo, bassist for Metallica, considered Pastorius to be one of his heroes, and he felt that the family ought to have the bass. Trujillo helped pay to have it returned to them, though he has used it live and is its custodian.” Do a search on here for “bass of doom” - there’s clips of Felix Pastorius playing it (who, dare I say, has become an even better bass player than his dad was), as well as other greats, including Wooten, Bailey and so on.

Well. Think we can all agree that this piece of wood hasn't been played to sound like "THAT" since 1986 I guess. "THAT " sound. "THE" sound . Very reminiscent of tunes such as "Chair in the sky" or " Goodbye porkpie hat" from Joni 's Mingus album. Or even WR's Speechless or Current affairs. Or Jaco's Work with Michel Colombier. That's what I call "the Deep Jaco" and that's quite a great job at channeling exactly that while playing your own lines, H. la classe T.
