I don't have experience with controllers so i can't advise on that, but once you are used to the buttons riding a horse won't be a problem anymore. There's one thing horses are bad at, though, and that's getting over objects with some height and that's because horses need forward motion to jump, they can't just jump straight up. So getting out of a ditch is hard. it's best to just dismount, get out yourself, and then whistle to let the horse come to you. (not possible during the tutorial chase, obviously). Jumping over fences and such is possible, but you really need to estimate your jump well. If possible it's often better to just go around the fence/bushes As for combat, you are still very much untrained, unskilled, and underequipped. you may defeat a single thug but a group of bandits or a trained soldier will kick you to kingdom come (ha title drop) in no time. At some point the game will give you freedom and access to a combat trainer. If you want improve your survivability in combat it's advised to train quite a bit, sooner rather than later. Not only does the player need to learn the ropes (spamming attacks is a sure way to get killed because you must learn to manage your stamina), but Henry also needs to up his skill points since that will give you more wiggle room for errors. Groups of enemies will always be a challenge, though. They wanted the reality of "strength in numbers" to really have an impact. Enemies will attempt to surround you and attack from behind. A group of angry peasants can still be a threat even if you're in full armor, especially if they have improvised polearms or so. Those polearms hit haaard You are STILL in the tutorial, btw. No, not a joke. On the next part, don't bother looting every club, every rotten carrot, every torn gambeson you come across or you'll quickly run out of inventory space and then you'll be slooooow. I'd advise to stick to the main quest for a while after the tutorial is over and very soon you'll get more options to deal with inventory. After that, you can do whatever you want. Some quests are timed, some are not. it's not always clear which are or aren't, you'll have to use your own instincts for that. Maybe one final tip: don't postpone quests just because they're labelled as DLC. The DLC quests are not meant to be played after you've finished the game, they're balanced around a Henry who is still growing. Especially "From the Ashes", which is quite cool, will become utterly trivial and boring if you wait till the end of the game. As far hardcore mode, i'm a big fan of that and advise it to everyone, but maybe not on a first run. Hardcore makes the following changes - no autosaves - no combat UI, such as block warnings, or HP, stamina. You'll have to judge your state based on breathing, darkening of the screen, blood splatter, etc - no fast travel (getting a faster horse is no luxury) - everything is more expensive to buy - YOUR LOCATION IS NOT SHOWN ON THE MAP (super cool, but on a first run this is probably too difficult) - map markers and quest makers don't show on your UI until you're really close, so you can't use them to estimate your location - NO CARDINAL DIRECTIONS IN THE UI. You'll have to use the position of the sun and the time of day if you want to estimate where north, etc is. I don't know any other game which does this - story bosses are better equipped - food from pots barely gives nourishment and drains loads of energy, which makes it a bad idea to eat from them, so no more free food all over the world - etc On top of that there's a list of 9 negative traits and you must choose at least 2 (i always take all 9. go big or go home) They are: - Nightmares: a stat debuff which lasts several hours every time you sleep - Claustrophobia: wearing helmets with closed visors will debuff you in combat - haemophilia: it's easier for injuries to start bleeding, and bleeding will cause you to lose HP faster - numbskull: -20% experience on everything (the only trait I dislike, everything is just more tedious to level) - consumption: slower stamina regen - the shakes: your hands tremble, affecting your archery, lockpicking and pickpocketing. especially low level archery is very hard - tapeworm: nourishment decreases faster - somnabulant: every time you sleep there's a chance you start sleep walking and wake up in a random location on the map. Don't forget that your location isn't shown on the map LOL. have fun waking up in the middle of some random forest. - brittle bones: more falling damage, you take damage from smaller heights, your sprain your ankles really really easily. Sprinting down staircases will literally injure you
