the early dogs where typical of the Malinois and the Dutch Herders, GSD show people say they are breeding correct type, correct for what can't jump bite or work with any drive, the founders of this great dog would be so disappointed with the way it has been taken

Show line breeders disgust me. They breed these 120 pound German show lines that die at 4 years old because of severe hip dysplasia, plus their heavy mass compacted with that- than the American show lines breed fragile, weak nerved dogs that run from a blowing bag in the wind. My dog looks pretty much like 1:23. She is lean and mean, mostly 1920's build. Show owners and owners of 120 pound dogs often criticize me saying my dog is too small... Even though she is the old style standard.

It is very obvious from watching this slide show of German Shepherd dogs that beginning in the 1970's there was a concerted effort towards molding the GSD to a bizarre aesthetic look that produced both roached backs and severe angulation of the hindquarters. By year 2000 the damage was done and the modern day show GSD bears little or no resemblance to the great working breed of the past. These animals are virtually crippled from birth with forequarters that walk and hindquarters that are forced to crawl due to the crippling effect of their grotesque bone structure.
@canreffy4 жыл бұрын
JackKangaroo - It was at that same time (1970's) that the same thing was happening to the Quarter Horse. Originally a sturdy, strong, catty, about 15 hands tall "using horse" for ranch work, it got made over into several types to the extent that some scarcely look like the traditional Quarter Horse any more. 1. The halter horse: tiny hooves, post legs, nearly vertical pasterns, huge hindquarters, upper legs that look like they're stuffed with footballs, sucked up flanks, pencil neck, huge jowels, tiny muzzle. Useless for anything except for standing around in the halter horse judging line-up. 2. The Western Pleasure horse: Many of the halter horse features, plus a way of going that makes it look as if it is going to collapse at any moment; nose on the ground, extremely slow forward motion, jog that looks like a 2 beat walk and a 4 beat lope, attitude of total defeat. Useless for anything except dragging itself around the show arena. ("With pleasure like this, who needs pain?") 3. Flat class horse: very tall (16, 17 + hands) pencil neck, sucked up flanks like a greyhound, tail (with fake hair) down to the ground so it wraps around the legs at each step, nose so low if it stumbled it would eject its rider right over its head. Useless in any real hunt situation. A lot of bad stuff happened in the 70's - stagnation of wages, manufacturing shipped off shore., deregulation of just about everything... Why?

I should point out also that fortunately Germany and several other European nations, notably Poland and Czechoslovakia, are still breeding working type German Shepherds that fulfill the breed's heritage as functional 'do anything' working dogs. The Doberman and the Reisenschnauzer [Giant Schnauzer in America] are also bred to a high level of excellence. And the Belgian Malinois, which resembles a GSD of the 1920s, has become very popular throughout the world for police and military uses.

in the 1930's, the problem already started with heavier dogs with shorter legs and stockier bodies being bred. That is already less agile nd worse for stamina that the leaner, lighter dogs. Seems the 1950s then began breeding an every so slight slope, probably for emphasis on the stack. This seems to have become more common in the 1960's and became a bit more noticable. It wasn't a curve, but more of a slope, still probably due to the more extreme stack. The 1970's really had more prominant slopes, probably became the norm in the show ring. More focused on, noticable, etc. The first actual noticable curve in the back seems to have come from this decade. 1980's had a development in that curve. 1990's became more extreme with the curve, and the dogs really look bad :( 2000's cermented that curve in the back to a strong feature of the ring.

This only shows the evolution that created the showlines!!! What about the breeders that stuck to the healthier and true GSDs, the working lines??? I am Von Gluckhaus Kennels and I breed only DDR, Czech and German Working bloodlines.Super working lines that have strong nerves, great health, calm temperaments and are beautiful without the over angulation.OFA says that the GSD still has 20% genetic hip dysplasia. I have been breeding great bloodlines since 1988 and I have not produced any bad hips

If this is breed "evolution," then it is evolution gone wrong. From viewing this photo documentary it is clear that the GSD in America reached near perfection back around the 1930s and remained sound and functional through the 1960s. I once owned a beautiful GSD born in 1961 and he was very sound. In the 1970s began the exaggerated angulation of the hindquarters culminating in what we see today; a virtually crippled and ruined breed. No wonder police & military now use the Belgian Malinois.

No wonder the modern GSD's are so clumsy now - they have lost so much of their physical abilities as utility dogs! Too heavy i front, arched back and the rear part look like hyenas - almost kneeling and with the tail between their legs... The "old" dogs had a beautiful balance and agility, and with a proud appearance. Luckily some breeders have found "old" types - keep on working to restore the breed!

@shortnanxious60889 жыл бұрын
Wow. They look like those three wheeled bikes: One wheel in the front Arched back ....with two little wheels on either side. Lol. I love German shepherds, really my favorite dog ...but a dog that has to support and balance 85% of its body with, little, short, weak hind legs and narrow hips all at a downward slope, all its life, that's a breed that will never beat any of the HERDING breeds of the past present or future. I don't see the GSD breed ever being able to run after and herd cattle and sheep as a life long career, ever again. The German shepherd is a new breed in comparison to other breeds, like the collie. Unfortunately, unlike the collie, I don't think it was even given a good chance to develope into a stable breed before the extreme changes to make an all purpose utillity breed were made after WWI. ...then, in the 50s and 60s the breed was again changed to this tricycle look, so far the breeding trend has not changed in 55 years. Generation after generation of tricycle looking dogs and I don't think the GSD is ever going to be able to recover on its own. Lassie and the standard collies, made it out of a popularity era and have retrained there breed purpose and most of their breed integrity. I don't think Rin Tin Tin and the German shepherds will, but I hope they do...

+ShortNanxious Kind of short sighted painting the breed with broad generalizations while only looking at West German show lines.
@pazrexthegermanshepherd47458 жыл бұрын
+Falkosmom Exactly. other person.... umm here you only saw the changes of the West German Show Bloodlines (Deutsche Schaferhund) This is not something seen in the whole breed...and just like there are bad examples in the bloodline there are good ones as well. Not all of them look like that,and many are actually capable of doing the same work as the gsd "back then".
@pazrexthegermanshepherd47458 жыл бұрын
also you clearly forgot or was blinded by this video to believe that there are many more bloodlines in the breed not just this one. The whole breed isn't like this. There are plenty of pet quality dogs out there, working lines and well bred American showlines that can do the job.
@shortnanxious60888 жыл бұрын
Falkosmom ...Yes, you are right...I have since researched more and have found breeders who have been breeding the different lines together, using the Veterinary Orthopedic Program and longevity performance Records for their breeding stock, There are are becoming some wonderful resulting German shepherds now with very little conformation problems. I also read that some of the non- registered German shepherd breeders have had remarkable success breeding back the health and Conformational integrity by opening up their stud books for a limited time to a limited number of registered Greyhound and (non Wolf, Deer, or Afghan) sight hound German Shepherd halfbred studs for a two to three year period. I think, it was originally opened for a limited 4 years while breeders could make the halfbred crosses...but so far the 3rd Gen pups are looking to be O.F.A. and Veterinary certified through out every litter and pup. So, They are finding Avenues. One non registered breeding group introduced the Sight hound stud rule and limitations as well as the Sight hound( approved colors)/ Collie (approved Sable lines only) cross as well as the Sight hound /Malinois cross the Sight hound/ Tevern ...approved the Sighthound/belgian Sheepdog ( very restricted to no more than 2 approved cross studs for breeders in a region due to the chance of solid blacks) ...All the crosses were restricted to 3 approved cross studs per region per cross...all nd a breeder could only register 2 live litters from a crossbred...but could only register one female and one male in the half German Shepherd register... Total...but other breeders could buy the Half crosses and register one male and one female as breeding stock for themselves...So so German shepherds breeders are working on out crosses for their herding lines and some are working on mixing the best example of eachline of the different lines for their herding German Shepherds.... But that's the Breeders who are using them as cattle and bison herding stock dogs...so the restricted and limited crossing of German Shepherd herding stock breeders is to also to ensure they have the German shepherd size, Temperament and herding qualities and the improved conformational health and longevity of their dogs to keep them working and breeding for much longer periods. Appearantly it saves them on time and money to have to train new dogs and buy new breeding stock with some of the lines... seems to keep the dogs herding until 8 or 9 and living to 12-15 years from some of the crosses they had done before the stud book agreed to opened up to some of the crosses for a period. The Breeders that are breeding the best OFA dogs from the different pure bred line are also having much success and improved conformational health as time goes on...so I agree The German shepherd is or can be bred to be a conformationly healthy dog...if breeders and judges choose to breed for that...
@Falkosmom8 жыл бұрын
ShortNanxious There are already many breeders breeding for health and temperament without opening any stud books. I never even heard of that. Can you provide a link?
@djhogan65 Жыл бұрын
Look at the DDR (east german) dogs. They took a different genetic path to these west German show dogs from 1945. The DDR dogs have square angles, straight backs, more like original structure, just developed heavier boning. In DDR dogs hip back and elbow problems are rare. Temperament wise, DDR dogs are generally superior to western lines for real life work like police, military, border guard, and prison work. Their strong physique and nerves is not accidental, they were bred to be work dogs. The west show breeding destroyed this breed, weak nerves, bad backs hips and elbows just so the dog would have "the golden gate". When you understand the bio-mechanics of a dog, the "golden gate" looks dysfunctional and disabled. It is so sad seeing this breed destroyed and most breeders blindly following the misguided show type. Thank goodness there are at least a few breeders who preserve some remnants of the old DDR dogs.

(Big German Ornamental Companion Dog).
