For what? Running a train?
@lesbird20745 жыл бұрын
Not just for running it but for running along a road
@bombaymolotov5 жыл бұрын
@@lesbird2074 Nowt to do with regulations - trams run on standard gauge, are classed as railways and are permitted. I assume it was more an effect of desirability. When they were being built no one wanted them in the countryside, let alone town and city centres, so they were consigned to the outskirts. Besides which, many of our towns and cities haven't been planned as such so they are an organic mess of small streets and hard corners, building a railway through the middle of one would bankrupt you. Hence why the big cities have a lot of termini rather than through routes. Add to that the post-WW1 government's fire sale of old army trucks allowing more people to become owner-drivers to start their own road haulage companies, and the post-WW2 government's drive to push road building, the private car and road haulage - nothing to do with the Minister for Transport's family owning an asphalt company - and it killed any need for the railways to come into the towns and cities. In the present day - where most of these possible safety regulations you allude to would most likely come from - we aren't really building railways anymore and if we do, there is no need to run trains through towns and cities on streets. Besides which the costs would be stupendous. Rail fans need to appreciate we came after the railways, not before. While they amuse us, they weren't built for our amusement. Complaining about "regulations" and "people being stupid" as a reason for why you can't live in a town with a full size train running through the high street ignores everything about running a railway.

It just seems so surreal seeing a locomotive rolling through a modern city Street like that... It almost looks super imposed onto the video... You don't expect to see one of these roll down a city block like that... It's like a residual ghost train.. !! It's awesome to see these locomotives still in service today. : )
@nekomasteryoutube32325 жыл бұрын
I would agree that it looks odd seeing steam and an older diesel shunter moving through a modern city, even more weird since I'm not aware of European railways doing steam excursions like we get in NOrth America. I wonder what some of the older people where thinking when they started seeing the once familier plumes of smoke and whistles in the distance only to be greated by the sight of a big black steam locomotive puffing along, something that hasn't been seen on european railways for decades now.

Steam excursion trains are very popular around the world. In Germany in the winter the air is so cold the steam hangs in the air. This steam engine has been converted from burning coal to diesel oil. Cheaper and much cleaner. This train has a diesel on the back end to pull it back so it doesn't have to turn around. East Germany (DDR) was still using steam trains when the wall came down 25 years ago. They were surprised so many people want to still ride steam trains.
