I am NO expert, but I experienced a major peck tear 19 years ago. The only advice I have is if you are feeling that "sensation," listen to your body and play the long-game. You can risk it and hit 1 PR today, or be smart and still be hitting PRs 10, 20, 30 years from now.
@jebudylajtwejt80512 күн бұрын
I'm a big Thor fan but I doubt he'll be able to PR in the bench press in year 2035. By then he should have achieved all goals and already done with strongman forever. And finished weighing over 150kg in body weight. But I agree with you that he can take it easy anyway
@impaledface76942 күн бұрын
This is just generally good advice.
@demetriuscooksey71472 күн бұрын
@jebudylajtwejt8051 yeah. I'll be 50 in a couple months and still set PRs, just not lifetime PRs. Like the other day I did a pull-up "since I turned 40" PR. 9 months ago, I set a "since I tore my pec when I was 31" bench press PR. As the years roll by, you gotta find ways to be motivated to stay in decent shape.

Breath life into your pec. Relax it so it doesn't choke with stiffness. Fear can cause the wrong muscles to contract which can cause injury. Courage can revive the tissue but be intelligent too. Build the confidence which will eliminate injury causing fear. It takes time and patience. You are doing extremely well with big weights. Maybe prioritize lower body, deadlift! etc.. until the full confidence in the pec is back to push it harder.

I think the sensation is simply nerve irritation from the tear Have you got your surgeons opinion on it?
@MovieMuscleКүн бұрын
Nerve entrapment is possible from scar tissue, and adhesions. A top level neuromuscular doctor can also look at his firing patterns via EMG. They may have done this...if not top level ART and a thorough EMG is where I would start.MRI has likely been done to look at things post surgery already.

Thor, whats the reason for the closer grip bench press? Is it due to the injury or just part of the training plan?
@kylef9276Күн бұрын
I'm not a doctor and this isn't medical advice but it could be nerve sensitization meaning the nerves might still be sensitive/overactive due to the initial injury despite it being fully healed. Ask your PTs/doctors about it if you weren't already aware of it, but the biggest "treatment" that you are already doing is desensitizing by continuing to bench like normal (assuming it's no more than just a very minor uncomfortableness), there's also CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), mindfulness, and different other techniques as well. Like when you're benching, if you just feel a very minor/slight sensation you don't want to adjust your cadence/focus on it too much because your reassuring your brain that there must be something wrong. So instead just be like "Oh hey that's a very slight sensation, that's okay!" and then keep it exactly the pace you would if you hadn't felt anything to begin with. From what I understand there's the biopsychosocial pain model, which means a lot of pain (maybe most?) is actually an interplay of biological, psychological, and social factors.

13:30 Attention creates.... If you want something and you think about it and get happy about it, you are creating more of it..... and the same with attention to the negative, if you say NO to something, and you give it more attention like " I dont want more of this, I dont like it" and you keep focusing on it, you are creating MORE of it...... the trick is to always let the worries go, and focus totally in the positive expectation and feel that.... move on from the injury, dont even remember that you had it, you are a new man, strong and healed. and focus on the next goal!!! Repeat it 10.000.000 times in your mind if necessary, until you convinced yourself of the new reality. Remove your attention from the issue, focus on the story you want to create. Control your mind/inner dialogues and you will control the outcomes of your life.

Higher rep range, higher frequency larger ROM and much lighter weights. No matter whether the sensation is just mental or there is actually still something not 100% healed, getting the body used to the motion again will help. Maybe even regress it to pushups and work on volume and ROM there...

I am not anywhere near your capabiluty. But i trained for 25 years and coached a lot normal and amateur guys. To me the question would be: DO I REALLY NEED THE BENCH. ? FOR WHAT DO I NEED IT? ARE THERE OTHER EXERCISES WHICH CAN REPLACE THE BENCH? I think you want to get better overhead. So i would do a lot of overhead presses, but different ones. And substitute with 30° incline dumbell bench. You asked. This is my opinion

@NoBSTradingAnalysis2 күн бұрын
my advice - pause ever rep on bench from now on. Dont do any touch and go, its the change in direction that tears pecs 99% of the time - pausing every rep - removes that change in direction speed to 0 and the negative sensations will be minimised massively
@shekargarvey83302 күн бұрын
Didn’t he tear it pausing it?
@JonWi-of6wd2 күн бұрын
Pausing keeps the muscle at max tension in the most fragile position (stretch). Reactive contraction can of course cause tears as well, but so does pausing high loads in the stretched position of the pecs...
