@Jorphdan, I think it’s a good time to explain a concept that I came up with: “The Color Cosmology” Where pairs of complimentary colors share the same orbital path around a color that’s made up of those two colors, and each color has a unique “personality” based on the color’s meanings, and this cosmology also helps me classify immortals (or supernatural creatures in general): White - Angels Black - Fiends Purple - Monsters Green - Spirits Orange - Kas (kami/youkai) And I was going to connect this comment to the video by saying that “Fey” are one of many groups in the Ka group but I just wanted to throw “The Color Cosmology” idea out there -Double D

Van Richten's Compendium has an entire "book" that covers hags, in detail! I always enjoyed Van Richten's story. Hes one of my all time favorite NPCs, in any game, ever! That and I genuinely love Ravenloft! I suggest the book for anyone, particularly DMs, who want to add a lot of detail to their big bads! The Hag "book" also covers Witches and Warlocks as a character class option! I haven't played in years! But if O were to start again. I'd either want a Warlock as they are in 5th edition. Or one of the Witches or Warlocks from the Ravenloft setting. The Witch and Wsrlock classes have differences beyond their genders! If you can find a copy of Van Richten's Arsenal, Volume 2, I believe, The Hallowed Witch class is almost identical to the ones in the Hag book.

Planning a feywild campaign, here's an idea for a random encounter: In the forest you come across a gypsy woman travelling with a giant turtle that has a small carnival tent on its back. The turtle never stops, it's always moving forward very slowly. The gypsy woman offers to read your fortune from cards for a couple coins. The reading is oddly specific. It has a place, a time, lore of riches or magic items and a vague description of a horrible monster. If you follow the "path" of the fortune teller you come upon the place in which resides the horrible monster described by the hag, guarding a chest or a glass box with the reward foretold. When you defeat the monster(s) the gypsy woman appears huffing and cursing for you not falling in battle. She begrudgingly says "Looks like I have to finish this myself" and reveals her true form, that of an ugly hag. FIGHT! The true tale of the hag as is follows: She is coming from a line of hags who are passing the "Deck of fortune" onto their next sister in line. This item is cursed as it can tell an exact future encounter for others but not to hags. These hags roam the lands in search of adventurers to lure them into combat weakening them and if need be, defeating the left over fighters themselves. After the adventurers fall they take the riches and magic items that was "created" by the deck for themselves. Usage: You can create an actual deck with the "encounter cards" or just create a table (cryptic pictures and vague descriptions of place, time, monster, reward) to have your players generate a random encounter for themselves by pulling cards from a deck, with in-world mechanics. You have to balance the two back-to-back fights so that the players don't immediately die in the second one, but is a good chance take them on with a hag when they are already low on resources. Good lesson for them not to blow all their spells and stuff on a random encounter when they don't know what's coming next. One thing I don't know is how to present the tale of the hags with the cursed deck to the players in-world. Worst case is them telling to a friend NPC who knows about the hag but forgot to warn them or something... Opinions? Ideas? Lore corrections?

More on night hags: they often make deals with powerful yugoloths, mutating them into more powerful forms in exchange for some special service. When the lich-god Mellifleur attempted to corner the Lower Planar larva trade, the worried night hags created the altraloth Typhus to drive away the power's undead armies. Anthraxus the Decayed became an altraloth in exchange for killing off the invading Knights of the Planes Militant. The flip side is that the other yugoloths despise the altraloth for tainting the purity of Evil. The General of Gehenna, the most powerful of the 'loths, isn't a unique fiend, he's the first ultroloth. The masters of the Tower Arcane are arcanaloths. Mydianchlarus, the current Oinoloth, is an ultroloth.

Always wondered why no simple "witches" in Dungeons and Dragons, at least none in MM-1, MM-2 and FF that I ever saw? Maybe the witchcraft thing they were worried about at the time, but Demons and Devils abound in all three monster volumes???
@dynamicworlds15 жыл бұрын
Depending on your flavor of witch, hags (for the distinct evil creature), warlocks (for the pack with an evil being), or druids (for more of the magic wise woman) are all appropriate things to pull from. Considering that witches can refer to anything from green skinned malevolent creatures, to people who have made pacts with a devil, to real-life wiccans, there's no one way to protray that, so (much like there are multiple ways to portray even something more mundane like a knight) you're given ways to make different witch archetypes under different names (and even more in previous versions) and it's left to the GM to decide what wayS they might be referred to in setting. This splitting of one thing into several mechanical representations and being able to use one class to portray multiple things is all over the D&D books (with a _lot_ of the monsters listed being different names for the same thing interpretated differently to not shut out different interpretations people might want to being into their game)
