Sharif it's good to see your topic Tuesday pretty consistent these days. On top that it is pretty awesome and helpful for teachers who are planning on coming to Korea for teaching. great job on bringing the the real stuff.

That is absolute crud. I don't know what year that was, but I wish there was a packet that new teachers could be given at immigration when they get their ARC card. It would include the Foreigner's rights workbook, numbers to call for translation services, and labor board and immigration. I would also want it to include some scenarios like these. "Oh, you aren't getting paid and haven't been paid for a month. After 14 days you are allowed to file a petition with the labor board about non-payment. Even if your job begins to make threats you should continue to go to work and record any and all conversations, making sure you are heard on it, too." Sharif- it is really great that you are doing these and I wish more people were seeing these, so they can 1 know, it's not normal and 2 that there are better jobs if it's their first time teaching. Just like Jason, many people just go along doing overtime and such and not even getting the pay they were supposed to be getting for that. Makes me so sad that people in the world want to rip off others to enjoy their own pleasures.

Classic signs of a school about to close down. I just wish I had recognized them when they happened to me. For months leading up to my school closing down my pay was paid in installments. Then one day I was asked to stay back on a Friday and the director told me the school was closing down at the end of the month and I needed to move out of the apartment. Luckily I was able to find another job in that time. I only got paid about half of my final pay check though. They reasoned that my hours had been cut drastically in that last month, which was true, so my pay was cut to reflect that. At the time that made sense and I didn't say anything. I still don't have much resentment towards that director. She was at heart a nice lady (who did some shady shit) and we ended on good terms. I loved her kids too.

Love that this is so real! I'm switching from public school to a hagwon in late August and really hoping for no horror stories to share a year from now lol

Your story is much more chill and relaxed and hopeful compared to the female hagwon teacher who just complains about getting extra money and moving upwards.

Of course we can't prove it, but I think your race and gender might have been why you were treated differently than other teachers. Korea is beautiful in its own way, but sadly xenophobia and racism/colorism is alive and well there. I wish it weren't the reality.
