Best 3 years of my 26 year career. I was in the 496th from 86-89 and lived in Bullay on the Mosel. I was the only American in town at one time. I used to drive up to a married friends housing on base to watch football. In those days all you had was the phone and that was expensive. AFN reached about a quarter mile off base if you were lucky. I'm glad now I was there without all the TV and Internet options. It forced you to immerse into the culture. We thought it was great to have a VCR and rent movies or have friends in the states record TV for you and leave the commercials in them because we missed them. :)

I recall watching the coal being dumped into the bin as a kid. My father was stationed at Hahn from late '59 to early '63. I was 7 y/o when we left. Loved my time there. Lots of young memories. Thanks for this. First time seeing the inside since we left in March of '63!!!

My father was stationed there twice. I grew up in building 1333 B1 closer to the High school during my elementary days. 1976-1980. On my dad's second tour (1984-1988) they added an addition to the outsides corners of the housing to have laundry rooms (I think they were). Laundry was in basement when I lived there. Tenemts on the top floor hated life. We lived in off post housing when my dads second tour in Rhaunen. Thanks for the video! It brought back fond memories.

I remember leaving our housing apartment and sliding down the stairway banisters every day. 1964-66 19-B-4. Also remember taking the trash out and walking the dog was a real chore. LOL Still a wonderful couple of years as a teenager.

Hello, so interesting to see from the inside. It is in okay condition inside compared to the outward appearance, (floors look very nice still) . I worked at the commissary in 2016 for civil reasons. Nice to read the comments from all the people who used to live here. Iam German and live close to the airport. Place still has the magic of the past. 👌👏👏

Thanks for adding this. I grew up on Bitburg from the mid 80's to mid 90's and the layout is nearly identical to our 4th floor unit in Bitburg. It's depressing when you see those overgrown back yards and can just envision how vibrant they once were. We would go stairwell to stairwell and offer to mow the yards for money.

We lived in the fi rst building on the left as you came into the ho using area from the base. I left Germany and when we came back, we lived in the b uilding across from it at the opposite end. Our tour lasted in totality from 79 - 85. We really hated to leave. Hahn was my second time in Germany. I lived at Furstenfeldbruck AB in the 50s with my folks. . In 87 we returned ot Europe and lived at Soesterberg AB , Netherlands. We used to visit Hahn now and th en. Going to old haunts was a lot of fun. The First G was one of them, and driving down to Bernkastel. sigh, "Them was the good old days". lol What a waste of of housing. After the renovations, anyone would have been happy to have a unit like those. I worked at the Bowling center and later at the AYA down the street from our unit, and the kids went to elementary school and high school.

Lived there '54-'57, top floor, access to attic, awesome places to play in the surrounding forest, shooting pellet gun at one of the F100/F86 targets, hit an MP in the face with a snowball and got caught, Saturday matinees, short walk to elementary school, Little League baseball (still have team picture), first kiss second grade (Claudia,, where are you now?), Everest across the street, Yeager nearby, first day there the air raid siren went off at noon scaring the heck out of us (thanks for the warning, Dad). Dad was in the 69th with the Matador missles, trips for him to Libya shooting them off. Many other memories. The Capri Italian restaurant in Lautzenhausen, long gone I'm sure. Still have yearbooks from 2nd, 3rd grades, German language lessons. Radio was the entertainment, all those great shows. Didn't really see a TV until late 1957 at Vandenberg.

Randy, that's the exact apartment we lived in from 68-72. You must have moved in right after us. We also lived there from 63-66 in building 27 A4. Used to jump the whole stairs and slide the rails going down. Played a lot of baseball and football practice behind our building. Thanks for sharing, and sad how it's deteriorated and been vandalized. A lot of good memories living there. We also lived off base in Sohren.

Mr Hopkins...Was reminiscing the times my Dad was stationed at Hahn & stumbled across your video. It made me happy & sad. Heck, I lived there almost 3 years (1985 - 1988) & didn't know of the baseball field! Haaa...Then again, I was 15 - 18, so let's just say I spent a LOT of time in Lautzenhausen :) While watching your video @ 1709 when you panned left from your balcony & mentioned the AYA...That building you see first was the building I lived in! Top floor, very left had side! If I recall, the Elementary was further to the right & behind the AYA, correct? I wish the buildings will still be standing in a year, because I'd really like to take my Daughter there to see where her Dad lived. Thanks for posting & for the memories!! Cheers...

Wow, this takes me back! My Dad was stationed at Hahn from 1985-1988, and we lived in the nearby town of Bärenbach, about 1/2 mile from the base front gate. I attended Hahn Elementary for 2nd and 3rd grade, during which time they added a new wing to the school; an impressive 2-story building with glass hallway parallel with the front, like walking inside of a glass tunnel which overlooked the playground tarmac. We often visited friends in base housing, and I remember very well those railed balconies with the rounded corners, and the fenced storage areas in the basement. Except in their building, each individual unit was partitioned only by a chain link fence, so the hallway resembled a dog kennel. I believe there was a stairway exit to ground level at either end of the building, in addition to the central staircase which emerged in the front. I'd forgotten about the 'attic' landing above the 4th floor until I saw you continue all the way to the top of the staircase, then it suddenly came back! We used to explore the building and play hide & seek in that area. Looking at old photos, I see that Pam and Mark's apartment had a carpeted main living room, whereas the ones in your building had wooden floors. The bathroom, however, looks exactly like I remember! All of the green tile and that deep bath tub, and the square frosted windows that opened with the turn handle. We had such good times there back in the 80's, despite the miserable rain and snow, which I grew to love! We would walk down the farmer's access road to a steep hill above the road to Sohren, and sled down the slope on giant inner tubes that my Dad got from Vehicle Maintenance. We also had one of those plastic snow discs. Man, I wish I could return to those days... It's kinda sad to see the base in ruins decades later, but it doesn't spoil all the great memories of Hahn. Thank you so much for posting this video for military brats like me, and USAFE veterans who served in that wonderful country of Germany.

Jumping the stairs, playing with barbies in the stairwell.. and spooked out by the dark attic but making runs through it to visit friends on other side. Lived in B8 ( cant recall building number) from '73 -'76. My oldest brother had his own room in the basement. I distinctly recall it was referred to as the "maid's quarters" but have no idea why since the housing was constructed for military families. Also there wasn't a high school yet and my brother had to go to Wiesbaden every week for school. I've seen other videos over the years and wondered why the city never used the buildings in some way?
@HopkinsChannel3 жыл бұрын
Many of the buildings are being used now. Various police departments, training, etc. Also - I was there 72-76 too. My 2 older sisters went to Wiesbaden for high school too. I walked to school to the base...thru the woods. Played on Murder hill snow hill in the winter, etc. Hung out at the AYA - the place with pool tables. I was aged 10,11,12,13 and finished up grade 7 or 8 the summer we went back to the USA which was July 1976. Oh...My brother had his room in the maids quarters too.

Totally agree Terry! I bowled a lot. Was in 5,6,7,8th grade, so about 14 years old in 1976 when we left Hawn. The hotdogs and food in the bowling alley was magical!
