Fabulous review Marty! Thanks. So happy that Hahnemühle stepped up to produce these books. Your detailed binding analysis was particularly interesting. I've not really used one of the white Etchr books since I have started too many other sketchbooks already but the binding problems are so worth noting. I'm excited to get to my review which I hope to do this week. Thanks for the mention. Looking forward to comparing notes with you at some point.

I thought my hearing or my phone was wonky! 😊 Wondering if you've tried Winsor Newton 100% cotton watercolor cold press paper pad... I buy mine in 5 x 7" spiral pad, 15 pages for about $14-$15. I'm tempted to take my Arches and have it made in a binder format... they do this at most office supply stores... Staples for one!!! Thank you for sharing!!! A California Gramma ❤

as soon as i found out hannehmuhle finally makes 100% cotton sketchbooks, i bought them online immediately. i loved their akademie sketchbooks for urban sketching, compared to etchr's regular cotton sketchbooks. i felt like the regular etchr cotton papers make watercolor paints look dull even when i was using artist grade paints like daniel smith and white nights. they also dont granulate paints enough for my liking which is quite disappointing because their sketchbooks are quite pricey. and you're right, their sketchbooks fall apart easily. it's quite frustrating for a brand that boasted themselves for making the best sketchbooks. so once i used up the etchr ones, i went straight back to hannehmuhle despite not being 100% cotton. it's just the next best thing after 100% cotton papers. cant wait for my new sketchbooks to arrive and paint with it though!

I so love your intricate drawings of these 'medieval' figures! These would make great illustrations for a book on history. It's great to see that Hahnemühle expands their product range. To my great delight they also created a unique journal with coloured pages at the core called '1584 by Hahnemühle'. Cheers! ✨

They are from woodcuts celebrating the triumph of Maximillian I. www.artic.edu/collection?artist_ids=Hans%20Burgkmair%2C%20the%20elder I need to check out 1584 - Thank you for the tip my friend. I think it compares favorably. It's not a new paper, just new in a sketchbook so Hahnemuhle has lots of great experience with this paper. I think comparing the two, I like both very much, but give a slight edge to Hahnemuhle because I like the surface texture of the paper a little more, but that's strictly my preference. Yes, you will tend to save a bit on the W&N I think, especially if there is a sale. Thanks for the question and for watching.

Hi, Marty. I've just watched this video for the second time, over a year after the first time. I'm wondering how you feel about the sketchbook now? I'm asking because a lot of folk gave it great reviews on the basis of first impressions, but quite a lot of us (and that includes three of my favourite ArtTubers) had issues with the sizing of the paper from the beginning. We all bought ours on its first release in the various countries, in Australia, USA and mine, in France. Ours just don't like more than one wet wash, and on some pages, doesn't even take that. The paper produces strange blooms and textures, and faded colours, indicative of sizing issues. Some of those who loved it on first trial have discovered the same thing as they worked through the book. I don't know if Hahnemühle has resolved this issue ( would hope so, 18 months later!), but none of us is willing to chance it. I switched to dry media only in mine, as I got soooo fed up with the problem with watercolour, and others have switched to gouache. For all the expectations, trumpeting its arrival, and the price point, even for those of us in Europe, this was, and is, a definite no-go. ..
@owingsart Жыл бұрын
Hi There - Sorry for the delay. I did reach out to Hahnemuhle and they are looking into this. They promised to reply soon with details. It may be that they've resolved the issues you outlined. I didn't have any significant issues with the books I bought and have been using them since. However I don't usually soak the paper or do a lot of mixed media work. My sketchbooks are generally graphite, ink and watercolor, but sometimes gouache. Hoping they respond soon and are transparent about the issues if they've been widely reported. I love the company and their products so fingers crossed this was a glitch. Thanks for the message and the opportunity to look into this.

Love love love the way you used the style of the old etchings in your people. It very much reminded me of a 15c etching. Lovely. To me that's the greatest art on the planet. Becaue it brought visual art into every home. For the first time people weren't limited to political & religious statuary of the ancient world; the amazingly beautiful art only seen in cathedrals and palaces. For the first time great art was available to ever class and every home. I know people like to pretend books or paper was out of reach back in the dark ages, middle ages, victorian age but it isn't true. 100% rag paper was made from recycled clothing. There was so much of it it was basically free. Guttenberg didn't invent the press. He invented the alloy used in the type & partnered with the church to publish mass quantity and therefore inexpensive product. But people had printed press books long before he came along.

It's interesting that Fabriano makes the Etchr sketchbook paper, and I love Fabriano Artistico paper. The paper in the Etchr sketchbook seems different, though, less top surface tooth. I wonder if the paper is treated differently because it's going in a sketchbook. I've never tried Hahnemuhl. It looks good!
@owingsart2 жыл бұрын
Hi There - Etchr doesn't use the Fabriano papers in anything except the Signature sketchbook - maybe you knew this already, but just wanted to mention in case you didn't. So in their other sketchbooks they use paper from a Chinese plant I believe. They actually aren't very transparent about where they source that paper, so I'm guessing. And they do treat both types of paper differently as you suspect. You can see this most clearly in the texture of the paper. I am really glad we finally have another option with Hahnemühle and they really have made a great product here. Hope you get a chance to use it soon.

Watercolor paper, as well as other papers for art purposes, are made with sizing. This gives the paper it's properties in regards to how it absorbs and holds paint and water. It's basically a gelatinous glue. This sizing can be made from animals or plants. And in the case of books, blocks, etc. there are glues, and often also inks and dyes needed to manufacture the whole product, which is yet another way how animal products could play a part.
