This unit was purchased a little over a year ago. It was on sale for under $100, so I have no complaints about it. Don't get this if you're expecting it to cool a large room on a really hot day, because it's not gonna happen. It's perfect for small rooms, and surprisingly quiet.

I bought this 4-5 years ago. The room I use it in is very large and it is a wonderful a/c. This is the best a/c I've ever spent money on. I cut it on in May and run it continuously to Sept-Oct. I only shut it off to clean the filter. The motor is very quiet. Great bargain.

The haier 5000btu window ac with mechanical controls happens to be the best window ac unit built. I've had mine over 6yrs and has worked flawlessly, even thru the Texas summer heat, it holds it's own better than my 13000btu rooftop ac does. I've owned and ran many different btu window ac units over the years, and found that the Haier 5000btu works better in my application than something larger, especially for a small sliding window that the ac is installed on. I live in a 27ft travel trailer and that where the unit is installed at, my roof unit struggles in the the Texas heat to keep up, but the Haier 5000btu ac has no problem whatsoever.

$167.00 at Walmart 2020 I just ordered one here in North Carolina. I been using the Frigidaire 5,000btu machinal for power outages during hurricanes or whatnot for a few years now. One summer I ran it from the master bedroom door open, in the middle of the summer to the end. My electric bill was noticeably less from this little chill maker running only at night. My central unit is now out for the count, so this summer I will use two of these 5,000btu units. One new Haier, one 4 year old lightly used Frigidaire totaling a split 10,000 btu configuration in a small 1,200 sq ft house. A third would definitely make the entire house cold when running all 3. Keeping the bedroom doors open won't require all 3 running at the same time... Dirt is the problem with all ac units, these window units are easier to clean and keep clean. Leaving the washable mesh filter in place I use additional filtration by cutting a quality central system filter to sizes that will cover the intake of these little window units. The fan holds it in place or some tape to keep it from falling away when shut off. If you think it is constricting air flow to much lower it about 25% uncovering the top portion of the intake. I figure with the blower blowing right above it not much dust is able to get sucked in from the top portion, with all that continuous wind, but it does blow fine either way. The outside also collects dirt, leaves, and bugs make nets in them. What I will do this year is gorilla tape cut to fit cheap spun filters to the top, bottom, and sides. Spun filters don't filter all that well but they won't restrict air flow much at all either, mostly to keep bugs and leaves out. Lastly making a sun hood with a large aluminum turkey roaster pan keeping direct sunlight and rain off of it. The hood will require reinforcement to keep from blowing away in a storm. Keeping them clean, dry, and in shade will pay for itself. If nothing is done they just accumulate more dirt forcing them to work harder and harder until clogging up completely. Not to mention the slime that starts to grow in them about year 3. So if you don't remove them and clean them outside every year they are not performing anywhere near 100%, premature failure is expected. With a well maintained unit, I would expect more than 10 years use before some kind of failure occurs, if they fail before 5 years, that would be disappointing. With the additional filtration annual cleaning is so much faster and easier and smells fresher when cleaned before summer use not after.

@@ioccatonyz1 I just started it up for the first time this year, and the condenser fan was scraping against something. No big deal though, since I have to take it apart and clean it this spring anyway. Probably just leaves or something. You're right about the cleaning. I'm surprised these things last as long as they do considering how much people neglect them. I try to keep all of my units clean because they work so much better. I still think these are pretty decent. Not sure if they're using different refrigerant now or not.

@@carson01XJ The Haier specs say it's 5,050 BTUs uses 460 watts the competitor Frigidaire 5,000 BTU uses 450 watts. This was no accident engineers designed the Haier to put out just a little more cool that their closest competitor. Yet they advertise it as a 5,000 BTU unit. Found this out as I looked up the wattage.

@Tony Iocca Thanks SO much for the info on the additional filter ideas! That's the problem I'm having with mine is keeping the inside coils clean cuz the filter that comes with it isn't catching n preventing the dust n pet hair from getting into mine n it's relatively new n already starting to decrease in cooling n blowing out. Much appreciated! Btw, does anyone know how to remove the front of the unit that houses the filter so I can clean the coils?

have to agree with everyone I had this before but my problem is living in an apartment, if you live an apartment complex you have nowhere to clean it so mold will build up despite what you can clean in an apartment complex, even than the ac kicked butt! even without it being cleaned for 2 years. do i recommend it for that long? no! you don't wanna sniff mold while its blowing cool air in or leave a window open slightly and avoid from sniffing it. I was running in a little trouble IRL but I brought the same one. it's cheap, it cools down the living room, small bedroom, and most of the kitchen. it is hard to reach the bathroom but nothing a fan can't help. it helped pushed the cold air through the bathroom.

I'm looking at one of these Haier units - similar at 5050 btu for 150.00. It's for a room roughly 155 sq feet. One significant issue - horizontal (left/right) sliding windows, so I was also considering one of the hacks people are sharing on youtube for putting vertical window air conditioners into horizontal windows instead -- and with this air conditioner. What do you think? If I go with the window hack, they do have another Haier for 210.00 at 6000 btu - i.e. if you think this one isn't strong enough. Otherwise, there are portable air conditioner units for horizontal windows, but they're much more expensive - and, I've heard, they're a lot heavier and they don't work as well. We're in the PNW so I've been told swamp coolers aren't really worth it. But we just survived this historic heat wave here at almost 110 - it was horrible, and I'm especially concerned about our kitty. I think he might die of a heat stroke. Any advice, much appreciated. But we're looking to see if we could even cool just one room - and everyone hide out there (kitty included). We won't have to do this too often - but we do need something for those sudden and very high temperature days -- high 90s into the low 100s. Thx.
@carson01XJ
@carson01XJ 3 жыл бұрын
I would personally go with the 6,000 btu. This one works okay, but definitely seems to be underpowered at times. If you're comfortable doing the window hack, that would be fine. Just be safe. Portable air conditioners do not work as well. The single hose units are relatively inefficient because they pull room through the condenser and blow it outside. Window air conditioners don't do that. They do make dual hose portable air conditioners which are more efficient. Swamp coolers are useless unless you live in a really dry environment. I think the window a/c is the best option. Hopefully you guys and your kitty find some relief from the heat. Let me know if you have any more questions

No problems with mine. It needs to be tilting out a little for the water to drain outside. Some windows don't allow for that unfortunately. If it's tilting inwards it's going to leak into the house. Other than that, the water passage ways could be clogged up with dirt.
